Over the past few fill ups I've been calculating the consumption.
My driving is (I suppose :? )
Mainly commuting 5miles to work on reasonably free-running roads with a 40MPH maximum limit
School-run, same roads as above, but at 08:00 peak time & long queues
'Out & Abouts', not as often as they should be :(
Very little motorway work, once in the past 2 weeks (M62 jct 27 -31)
I tend to drive fairly conservatively, ie; 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd & 3rd to 4th changes are usually taken at about 1,100-1,200RPM
So, with regard to the figures
I've been getting
24.7mpg
26.7mpg
And over the last 300miles; 28.2mpg
Can 30mpg be near at hand.
Is this feasible from a 110Td5?
(used to see an average of 30-32mpg from the 110Tdi)

On short runs....no.
On motorways its only possibly to squeeze 30mpg with conservative driving.

So the TD5 is more uneconomicsl than the TDi. Surely this defeats the object of the Euro regulation on making engines cleaner as you have to burn more fuel to travel the same distance.

Its marginal and dependant on a lot of factors, tyres, weight, journey etc etc.
The TD5 also has more power and torque and in my opinion having driven both Tdi and TD5's its much much nicer to drive.

Sounds about right for a Td5 to me, mine generally does around 27mpg, driving it fairly steadily and with no offroading involved, mindyou I never managed more than 27-28mpg from mi' old 300 Tdi Disco.

My 90 TD5 will give 30 mpg normaly and 35+mpg with overdrive used. This is on motorway, back roads and the short trip to work. Have all terrains fitted and no roof rack.

Maybe its as said other factors like Smo said. Type of tyres, weight, roofrack, inflation of tyres, snorkel and red stripe.

if you auto logic it & drive gently you can squeeze 30 + relatively easily

i think my dad has a chip in his not had a go in one with out when you have the chip its a bit nippy

bit nippy
be prepared to leave saxo VTs's behind in a staright line dash & pull away from most hot hatches without a problem,although when you drive it like that the MPG goes down to about 22 ish

The td5 is meant to meet the new emisions laws, but it burns more fuel to do it, as it injects a bit of diesel just before the piston reaches top dead centre t oget things all nice and warm before the main burn (when it injects again)
Whereas your tdi motor will only inject once!

I was talking to Mr B today about towing, and he is of the same opinion, tow hard with a chipped/cooled TD5 and you get about 13 MPG. So you would have to drive really softly to get 30 mpg.
But as for Mr B and me, time from A-B is more valuble than MPG.
Perhaps when it costs £2 per litre, we will start taking the cost of fuel to be more important than time.
Getting 30 mpg from a 2500kg Land Rover, with the aerodymanics of a classic brick, is never going to be easy.
I am looking at building a new tow barge, with a 2.8Tdi, and to gain the extra power when towing, using LPG to boost power, as i have been testing a Powershot system, and it must be then only power increase system that uses less fuel, as the LPG/propane helps the diesel burn more efficiantly, so you end up using less right foot. I have been running around for about 3/4 weeks now, and havent used 19 kg of propane yet, but hills i would always drop to 4th, i just cruises up in 5th.
The best mod i have ever done to an engine, it does what it says on the box. :lol:

Ditto, BFG A/T's & no roof-rack
110 TD5 on stock road biased Grabbers does about 28mpg with Overdrive on mixed driving.
90 TD5 on 33" MT's with 1.5" lift does about 25-26mpg on mixed driving with heavy right foot :wink:
