Diesel drives McNish to pole

Allan McNish starts the Sebring 12 Hour race in Florida from pole position on Saturday after setting a new lap record in a diesel-powered car.

The 36-year-old Dumfries-born driver set a new record of one minute 45.828 seconds in the new Audi R10 TDI, at an average speed of almost 126mph, around the 3.7-mile Sebring track.

McNish became the first driver to claim pole position in a diesel-powered car and the Scotsman said: "It feels good to have made history. My Audi was very well balanced, the turbo diesel performed superbly while I drove probably my best-ever qualifying lap."

W12 Petrol is a Superb engine, having driven an A8 W12. Nice quite, well balanced and had that nice V8 burbling noise untill you put your foot on the gas...

Then Its howls like a banshee, I was impressed at the way it made 1 1/2 ton of luxury car move :)

VW Phaeton is the same engine too. I dont know it anything uses the W10 yet though.

Before I came into the topic I knew it'd have to be a VW unit, they seem to be pulling stuff out of Diesels that the other firms don't know exist.

Modern Diesels are at the stage where they can be made as powerful as there Petrol counterparts, and the advantage is that with the Diesel you don't have to fill up as often.

:D  :D I'm not bragging but my VW Caravelle cruises happily along at 110 mph on the French autoroutes provided you keep a look out for the local plod...at this speed the engine is running on 3500 revs...just my pennies worth...back to my corner

Bye now

We used have an Audi A2 with the 1.4 3 Pot engine, and it was an amazing little unit, considering it's size and the fact the A2 wasn't that well shaped it went with incredible ease, and would hold 110 for fun.

:D   I've always said I love a good diesel!  And it was here Statesaide as well!  Maybe this will help push the US market more toward small vehicle oil burners.  VW has done a great job in this market, too, but I'd love to see even more.

the diesel car won as well   :D

Scotsman Allan McNish clinched an historic victory in the 54th running of the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring race in Florida despite his Audi R10 having to start from the pit lane.

The victory was McNish's second in the traditional season-opener to the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), while his team-mate Tom Kristensen made history by winning the event for the fourth time.

"It's a fantastic night for us," said 36-year-old McNish after the race. "Audi have worked really hard - the mechanics especially - because we had to take this car apart this morning and we missed the start. We had to come from the back and that is the good thing."
