great,
i just agree to buy a 200tdi engine for £170, and on the way home my gearbox goes and locks itself into 3rd gear. i guess i'll be looking for a new one then.
i've checked the top of the gearbox, the selector just wont move
can anyone help? (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?p=204613#204613)

pretty cheap on ebay

fix it your self there eay to work on once out, and its only about £50.00 FOR ALL THE BITS YOU NEED you will need a good box if you fit 200tdi and the old s2 box is stronger than a s3 box

Upgrade it if you can.. IIa will be stonger but who wants to double de clutch in this day and age, especially if your fitting a diesel and retain the 4.7 diffs, order some new knees while your doing the refit.
Now an auto box..... h'mmmm
Take a peek at Percy on my site if you need any more temptation.
Only thing I'd have done different would have been a Galv chassis from the start.

Against common belief, the very last Series 3 boxes from the 1980s are infact stronger than both the 2/2A and earlier 3 gearboxes.

i've now got me a second gearbox which is in and working, but i'm gonna rebuild mine with any new parts i need ready for when i put the 200tdi in.
was gonna do it this weekend but i need to spend some money on it before it will go in.
the monkeys who removed it from the last motor werent too careful and have broke some of the thermostat housing off. which, by the looks of it i need to take the timing covers off to get at. so i might as well do the timing belt with it off. and theres a few other bits too, so the engine has been put off for now.
