golly gosh, now let's see I was stripping the entire vehicle so probably was a bit easier! With the steering shroud off you need to take off the wiring connector off the end. Then there is I think a cradle which holds the barrel in place, should be 2/3/4 (delete as appropriate) 8 or 10 mm head bolts that holt it in - once thats off the whole thing should drop out.
I do hope I haven't just made that whole thing up from some weird dream!

the "carrier" seems to be held in place with sheer bolts, so i can not undo them,
Most other cars there is a knack to removing the key assembley....
I too am breaking my old one !

mine came out no bother - I may have used a long bar but bring in the torque gradually so as nto to stap the bolts and to get over any thread lock etc and it should be fine.

the sheer bolts are already sheared ! [!Expletive Deleted!]

oh dear, sounds like another discovery job!
Are you good at getting those sorts of things out or do you need some pointers?

well, on most cars I have worked on there is a small hole some were on the case of the barrel that you can insert a 3-4mm drill bit then turn the key to ignition and the "key part" then withdraws, I have not found any hole on the casting to insert a drill bit,and the actual casing is secured to the column with sheer bolts that are designed (and have) broken of when they were fittied. I could chisel the sheer bolts loose have done that in the past, but its a real pain !
I think myself competant with the spaners, swapped engine on sunday and axles this week, its just when i find something hard its normaly cos there is a knack that some one else knows and can save me ages....

Are you sure they are shear bolts or just normal 'land rover bolts'?
lemme take a quick look in the garage I may be able to quickly find the barrell of a disco so we can see where the hole is if there is one (prolly under the clamp
Saying that I rem when I bought it I was told the ignition lock was changed - thats prolly why mine was easy to get off.
Sounds like yuo dont need any bolt removing tips then if you can do engines!

sorry had a look in the disco box and down the side of the house and I cant find it - it will probably turn up when I'm not looking for it - which will also be too late I guess..
Good luck!
