wheel bearing, you can re grease and tignten them up if the bearing is still ok.

if bearing is ok and you can do it yourself it wil not cost you anything

depends what other damage it has done in the process when mine went it wrecked my hub, stub axel brake disc and obviously the wheel bearings inner and outer just depends how much damge it has done that came to about £300 but did the job at home so no labour to pay for! the job probably took about 3-4 hours

If it is wheel bearing.
Nip over to www.lrtech.co.uk.
Please read my posts there on wheel bearings and hubs.

To check that it is a wheel bearing.Re-fit the wheel.Get somebody to hold their foot on the brake. If you can't still move the wheel when holding it at the top and bottom it's bearing.
If you can still move the wheel you'll need to look at the swivel pins.

right i stripped pas side and done most of that until i found out they had given me the wrong lockwasher. now on the drivers side the worst one, i managed to pull the hub off leaving the bearings on stub.the thread on the stub is flat and there is massive burs on the shaft. and the hub does not look too good. so does anyone know how much a new hub and stub would cost. and how hard is the stub to change

Stub axle isn't hard to do... just undo the ring of bolts and give it a tap with a soft mallet.

Cost is the issue...   stub axle is likely to be between 35 and 70 quid and the hub is likely to be 50 - 80
