Title: wheel lean
Post by: tjsj on March 30, 2006, 12:53:59
Got my new disco yesterday evening and it looks to me like the top of the passenger side front wheel is leaning in a very slight bit. Its got a 3 inch lift and 235/85/r16 tyres in case they do anything to make it like that. Anyone know what might be wrong, if anything??

Have you jacked up the wheel and given the swivel a good shake, in case there's a problem with the swivel bearings / pins?

first check swivel pins and bearing, most likley to be the top bearing which has gone

the other possibility is that the swivel is bent, i've seen this happen on 90 after a particularly heavy landing

Its not usually the swivel that bends imo.  If it is not the pins or just a bent wheel, then it is likely to be a bent axle.

I wonder how I know - www.discoverysport.co.uk

As Mr Lobster says give the wheel a good shake and spot for any play.  Failing that have a look from the front and see whether it is displaying negative camber (i.e. wheels leaning in at the top.)

Do you know whether the vehicle had been heavily off roaded?

Cheers

I'll jack it up later on to have a look. It's only very very slight in not at all it may just be the ground it was parked on.

It has been offroaded quite a bit in the forest of dean which I've heard can be very challenging so may have had a bash. The front diff has a slight sent on the cover plate on the front but nothing too bad. Can't feel any vibration through the steering wheels though. Even at 40 or 50 mph

Could just be your perception.  The wheels should have negligeable camber but sometimes they look odd against the bodywork that swell outwards towards the top.  If anything is bent I'd think it would be very noticeable.

there is  various dents and bashes in the wings so could be that I suppose. I'll go and take some pictures.

Anyone have any idea what the problem is?? (if there is one) and is it worth putting a smaller wheel and tyre combination on it as got some 235/70/r16 on rims and I could put one of them on it.

With the 3" lift has it got the new prop and radius arms ?

a.jpeg is the only useful photo here - as you will not spot the bend in any way other than comparing the two wheels from the front.

It might be useful having a photo from a slightly lower angle, but it looks like the axle is a little bent.  Have you checked the swivel pins yet?  You could probably even do it with the vehicle on the ground if it has 'that' much play in it.  Just shake the wheel from the top and detect any play.

I suspect the axle is a bit bent.  This is not necessarily a problem now, but over time and with more heavy use it will only get worse.

I shook the wheels like mad and couldn't find any play in it whatsoever. Sorry to sound dumb but what are the swivel pins.

Its had a hard life in the last year or two and its done 170k ok for me though as its going to be used round our field and my mates farm so not major stuff yet. It drove 80 odd miles yesterday fine though on the motorway too!!

will the wheels affect it at all because they are the range rover 3 spoke ones and not disco ones. Just a thought as I can get some 8 spokes fairly easily.

hi tom. mine does this also. i think its the wheel size, i don't remember it been that bad when had 235/70's on. mine sits on 235/85's.

Do you think its worth putting two of my dads 235/70's on the front just to see if its still the same then??

Might be accentuated to look at by a bigger wheel size, but the only way that the wheel will be implicated is if it is bent.  To tell this roll it forward 1/2 a revolution and see whether the lean is the other way round!

The swivel pins are the things that hold the hub assy on to the shiny chrome swivel - top and bottom of the black/brown/muddy casting. It would need quite alot of play for it to lean that far I reckon.

It is really difficult to diagnose by photo.

If it drives alright, and there is no play, then I probably wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if you are only going to be using it round the fields.

Just keep an eye on it.

Ok cheers Henry thanks for all that advice it helped a lot!!!! It can't be that bad as it drives fine. Had good fun in it this afternoon around the field though. I must say it does pull well for a 2.5 4cyl diesel. Cheers for all the advice but I can't see anything majorly wrong so it can't be that serious.

Can't be certain from the pic but it look ok to me, the lean when on lock is called dynamic castor and it's wrong on your because of the lift.  If the swivels were bent the swivel seal would be leaking/deformed especially as it's new.

If you are still worried stick a spirit level up against the 2 front tyres and check if they are both upright (or out by the same amount on a side-slope) but I think it's an optical illusion.

I've just had to replace the lower swivel bearing on mine - I noticed the wheel's camber actually change slightly when the jack took the weight off the wheel. Shaking/rocking the wheel did not produce a noticable wobble - until I took the brake calliper off and then - wow, no wonder I was having problems!
