Just bought second hand CAt for my 3.9 Discovery as the current one has been butchered.
Any way i can prolong the life before i fit it, high temp paint etc?
Any advice appreciated :)

keep it away from the dog
-
be gentle with it dont throw it about the ceramic inside are fragile and prone to cracking up don't put exhaust paste on the manifold side it can damage the ceramics.
-
Feed it Kiti-kat twice a day,
-
and it will run purrrrfect.
-
Only fit it for the MOT........
Oh no that would be illegal, Silly me
-
keep it away from the DOG
(doggy old garage)
-
Dont paint it, it runs too hot, dont get it immersed in mud/water when its up to operating temp(yeah right), dont bang/knock it, its fragile.
Like JWilly said, leave it in the garage till its MOT day, and fit the butchered cat or a bypass pipe in between

My father has a car from mobility, and from new its only 5000 miles in 3 years
I have a funny feeling the cat in this one has had it, so not running is as bad as running  , mind you not my prob, goes back end of this month anyway

On a serious side,
The best thing for CAT's is decent fuel(yes, cheap Morrisons fuel is cheap for a reason, ask my neighbouring garage, Subaru dealers!!)
and use the car for long high rev drives.
They thrive, and self clean if kept at operating temp for prolonged periods.
They hate bangs/bumps, they hate plunging into cold water, they hate cheap fuel, they hate short runs where they dont get up to temp.
Worse thing for a CAT is a misfire. Any sign of misfire, or difficult starting, means that the cat is gettin raw fuel thrown at it. This will kill it QUICK!
Get a misfiring car fixed asap, same if the engine management light comes on. Most cars will run a wee bit rich to safeguard pistons etc if the management light is on, again this means the CAT is dealing with excess fuel, and will die sooner.
Cheap non genuine cats arent always what they seem, the genuine parts Ive seen, tend to have more CAT material, and generally a much longer life, and arent always that expensive!!

Check the regs and the age of your veichle. Past a certain age if it was an option to can remove it. EG The Audi has been de-catted and it isnt needed fro the MOT in this cae. Its an H reg and was legally removed (Although I should remove the 'Shon Mit Katalyzer Technic' Sticker from the rear window) :D

Another thing that CATs don't like is sulphur found in diesel fuel (obviously not a problem with petrols), it cruds them up. even with low sulphur diesel the CAT will eventually crud up, it just takes a little longer.
One cure for this i've heard of is a weak citric acid solution (due to a dodgy memory usuall disclaimers apply and the type of acid may not be 100% correct :? ) which can remove the sulphur, extending the working life of the CAT.
