Just fitted a lumenition kit on the Series 3. When starting from cold its turns about 3 or 4 times then stops dead or slows right down before trying again. But when warm it starts first time...... I think its a timing issue, has anyone any ideas and how do i fix it?
-
sounds like its too far advanced. with electronic ignition if you set the timing static you always end up toofar advanced (assuming you 'set' the enngine then turn diddy till you get a spark). Back it off a bit at a time
-
yup, timing is too far advanced
basically its sparking too early so the bang tries to turn the engine the wrong way, against the starter motor. My dads rangerover did this, but once it was running it seemed to work fine. we just back it off til it stopped doing it.

So am i right in thinking that to back the timing off, i can use the little wheel on the dizzy that is linked to the advance/retard vacum (If that makes sense!)
-
Yup. Or loosen the clamp at the base and turn the whole thing

Well i re-timed the unit, accroding to the instructions in the box, and it started first time from cold with no faults, it drove great and idled great to. But when i came to re-start it after cold it wasnt having it..... not even trying to fire, and every now and then when i back of the key i get exhaust fumes coming out my air filter !!!!!!!
so now where do i go - its times up as per the instructions!!!!

are your tappits set properly.?
-
Havnt checked the tappits, ive compromised, and set it half way between the manufacturers recommendation and the original setting and it seems to have cured it for now - had to do something to get it off the street!!
Will get the workshop manual out and check the tappits over in the week!
