hi there, i am looking at getting a galv box section roof rack for my 90, but i am not sure which type to go for.?
the flat type or the type that follows the roof line(slopes at front)
they both seem to have pros and cons,but i am not sure if in the real world it makes any difference.
the flat type would be better for loading as the floor is all the same level, but more wind drag.
but the one that follows the roof line might have less wind drag, but harder to load as it slopes at the front.
i will be boarding the rack out as well,so any does and donts.?
any one got any comments or advise

Unless you need the couple of extra square footage of storage that the sloped one offers I would go for the flat one, esp if your boarding it.
A 'spoiler' might help with downforce on a sports car, but will do nothing to a landy!

Go for the flat one - as you have already sussed they are easier to load
I used 2 inch galvanised mesh for my roofrack held in place with lots of heavy cable ties to stop it moving/rattling - great for tying any shape or size of object to and a good non slip surface for walking about on
Cable ties mean no damage to galvanising therefore no rust but suppose it could be spot welded on then painted with high zinc primer

75kg, including th rack itself.

I managed to tie 70 six to eight foot christmas trees onto my 110 roofrack last year ! :shock:

so the total weight on the roof is 75kg
so how much does the roof rack weigh?
and how do roof tents work,if the max load on a roof is 75kg?

I think you will find that the rooftent will be within the weight limit provided it is empty - probably best not to have anyone sleeping in it on the move :D

so is the weight limit only for when the land rover is moving?
its best not to over load the roof when on the move, but just wondered what the max weight on the roof is when not moving, ie sleeping in a roof tent.
any ideas on the weight of a roof rack? does 20kg seem about right?

Phone some of the manufacturers of roof tents or racks - they should have all the relevant info
My brownchurch roofrack has extra bolt on legs at the front which go between front corners of rack and the windscreen hinges

The maximum roof weight for all UK Defenders is 75kg.
So to put that into easily understood sizes................
A full 20 litre jerry can of diesel weighs 22kg.
A full 20 litre jerry can of water weighs 24kg.
The max roof weight for South African Defenders is 150kg.
Now can somebody explain that to me please?? Because I certainly don't understand why!!

Board the rack with plywood.I use 6mm exterior ply held in place with cable ties.
If you use metal for boarding the rack components strapped to the rack will fret against the metal.
