Title: MIX OR MATCH?

need to change the rear shocks on my td5 disco, due to leaking.
can i fit gas shocks and leave the front ones standard oil .

or will i have to fit the same as whats on the front?

all so need to change the steering damper, but i guess theres no prob going to a gas type. are they better than the standard fit?

any advice on whats the best type of damper/shock.

For standard kit I would say Monroe gas adventurer's.
Had them on my classic for a while.
There is no reason why you could not run gas shocks at the rear and oil at the front.

ProComp have a limited lifetime warranty, DeCarbon 2 years, both are polular.  Some people swear by Bilsteins, some at them when they see the price :shock:

Get branded dampers, in a pair and you'll be fine.  Even the OE ones are rather good when new, most people's are old and tired so they don't realise how good they can be.

Don't worry about the steering damper, I fitted a ags one and found the steering 'pulled' to one side as a result, the car was lifted though and without castor correction.

thanks for the help guys,

so i would be ok sticking with standard shocks and steering damper.
as when new there ok.(being cheeper as well)

but no probs going to gas on the rear as long as i fit them as a pair.

still a bit unsure about the steering damper, are gas better than oil or not?
are they worth the extra bucks.

my disco is bog standard and all ways will be,covered 80k so it would not hurt to change the damper.

I'd put standard steering damper on as your car is as original.  What you save on the rear dampers you could buy a set for the front too!

That said if you want to tow it's worth something a little better.  The Monroe ones, whilst good have a tendancy for the upper eye to come apart though as they are only spot welded.  Spoils an otherwise good damper at a reasonable price :roll:
