any one help or had same problem,when i go over uneven road like drain in road steering wheel vibrates, like shock has gone or spring has gone.but cannot find anythink wrong with suspension ,its very unnerving at speed :roll: could it be antiroll bar bushes!!!!

Check your steering damper. :wink:

could be the steering damper....my disco was terrible....like your rangie until i changed it :wink:

Also check your steering swivel preload, track rod ends, steering box backlash and wheel bearings. I've got this on 2 of the RRCs at the moment and cannot get to the bottom of it. You feel it through the steering wheel but it's not a wheel shimmy like a wheel out of balance, jusy as if one of the dampers is duff. I find it worse when you fit bigger tyres, even the same rolling radius, just heavier and it's worse.

there is no damper fitted should there be one on a 3.9efi 1993 model as cannot see any where for it to bolt to. have fitted bigger tyres but was same on old rims, all bushs are ok and no play in panard rod, :?:

It should be behind the diff ! :?:
I have an 87 so it may be different on yours . :D

Sound like the nut behind the wheel to me ......Hows it going dave .....I,ve been trying to call for a couple of weeks now but I haven't had time . I will this weekend I promise . Probably when your under the thing at the end of the garden . :D .......Al

I have the same problem mainly going round slight left hand bends at speeds over 50 mph.
I have so far:- adjusted the preload on the swivel bearings "twice"!!. First time using a spring balance as per manual and the next by using "mechanics hand" (ie till the housing starts to bind then adding thinnest shim) as per advice from local Off road supplier/garage.
Took off steering damper (looks like a small shock absorber and is definatedly behind the front diff as prevoiusly posted dont know if yours should have one though) and checked it seemed to be OK.
Fitted polybushes
Adjusted steering box
Swapped wheels around
and finally last weekend fitted new shock absorbers as mine were leaking.
And guess what
Its still no better :x :( :evil:

i had exactly the same problem with mine. turned out i'd lost a couple of wheel weights. get your wheels balanced its suprising how far they can go out of balance

Got 2 new (well secondhand) tyres fitted and balanced and made no difference.
Got apprentice (12 year old daughter) to turn steering wheel approx a third of a turn back and forth whilst I checked all the joints for play etc. and found that where the steering column comes through the bulkhead the first UJ had play. But on closer inspection the UJ appears OK it is the column that has the play approx 2mm. Is this normal I cannot see any bearings in the manual/CD that support the steering column.
Also the rubber coupling is pushed back towards the bulkhead IE looks under stress to me

Big tyres do make it worse but the steering damper being missing, oh crikey. It bolts to a bracket under the diff and a bracket on the rear track-rod ie behind the axle.

going to buy new damper as it is missing !!!!! :shock: :but fitting still there

:D ust bought 1" lift kit from scorpion racing with all the bits ,heavy duty springs due to big gas tank just been fitted.Right hand spring soft,so time to up grade.And no we didnt want 2" lift.

no mate , what you want is a 2" lift . :D

it is more than likely the steering damper. esp. if there isnt one.
Be careful all of you though when buying new ones. A lot of companys sell steering dampers, but they are really just shockers. This is where the problem sometimes arrises; if you buy and oil filled one; as a shocker they are usually fitted vertically (pretty much) and as a steering damper they fit horizontally; thus oil sits up one side and not the other; thus IT DONT WORK PROPERLY. Buy a gas one and you should be fine. ;-)

Everything I do to mine makes it worse, especially the polybushes :shock: I've had the balancing checked (I'm going to try some other wheels now) and fitted 5 new OEM dampers. I've recallibrated the air syspension as it seemed to get worse in low profile (now I've done the bushes it's just worse, full stop).
Ok I havn'e done the swivles yet but the whole of the front end shakes up and down, it's not in the steering that much but you can see the bonnet shake.

I have just fitted HD police spec springs to the rear of mine and for the first couple of days after the shudder was much better in fact barely noticeable but now its getting worse again!!!!!!!!!!
