I heard about this on radio kent where a board of people are selecting British icons. Morris dancing and the mini skirt were two I remember and I thought the morris dancing odd because its history lies in coming from the Moors the Muslim group of peoples that had a large empire stretching from Egypt maybe to Spain.

And the Land rover is more of a global icon. :)
