Title: Where are the breathers?
Post by: Leigh on April 28, 2006, 21:38:26: I'm extending my breathers. I know where the front and rear axle ones are but where is the gearbox one? And are there any others?

I found some fuel line for only 50p a metre and some connectors which I am going to extend them with.

Post by: Bulli on April 28, 2006, 21:55:57: they are normally at the back of the engine bay fairly central. the tops are bent over, shouldnt be too hard to find

Post by: dminto69 on April 28, 2006, 21:58:02: on my 300 tdi the breather to the gear box is at the bulk head as you look at the engine its on the left hand side and you can see it going down to the gear box ,if you lift the mat away from the rocker cover it should be more visable

You should have 2 pipes in the bulkhead location described. The second (identical) is for the transfer box. Depending on what off roading you do it is possible to fit one to the timing cover also, but its a more involved job as their isn't one fitted as standard.

Post by: Leigh on April 30, 2006, 17:11:39: Yep found that right next to the gearbox one. So thats all four done. I'm going to get some wading plugs next. Isn't one of those for the timing cover?

DCheers Chris, didn't even know the fuel tank had one, so thats one I've missed too. Where does the breather end?

The timing cover does have a wading plug but if the engine is hot & you drive through water the warm air in the timing cover can contract and this can draw water through the seals, hence the reason some people fit breathers aswell as the wading plug.

It is the problem of this air contracting when its surrounding casing is suddenly immersed in cold water that makes an extended breather necessary. Therefore the fuel tank breather isn't usually mentioned because the tank isn't at a higher temp than its surroundings. The breather allows air in as the fuel level drops. It could be argued that water could enter the tank breather through simple immersion and this is something I haven't thought of before. :oops:
