Though that this may be a worthwhile topic, given that I hear that Ed was having his gearbox out over this weekend.
Anyway, for my part I had to strip down my OSR wheel bearing. Driving down the road today the bearing seized and I locked a wheel!! This had been noisy for a while but I thought it was stones or mud in the caliper. Wrong! :cry:
I reversed back a little to free it off and slowly drove home. Stripped it down to find that the inner races' carrier had disintregrated :?
All ready for a new one to be put in now ....... Must go shopping again. Grrrr
think that I will check the NS one as well just in case.

Prob worth while checking all at the same time, if you havn't done anything to them, they will be wearing well, especially the other on the same side as the one which gave way

exactly my thoughts!
its was dry as a bone in there - all of the grease was on the outside of the large lock washer!!
I shall do the NSR at least.

oh yes, I replaced the wheel bearing tonight, and will check the others .......soon. :wink:
I even had to buy my own hub nut socket today!

I can't believe any self-respecting Land Rover owner doesn't have a hub nut spanner.
You'll get to know it intimately after a while.

never mind Im £4 worse off now, but a proud owner of my very own hub nut spanner. :D
Im now off to the Disco page to see if u had any aggro with the gearbox!

Now you're the one with the hub nut spanner you'll have loads of mates.
You've got your bit now someone else can buy the dial guage.
Not that I've ever used one. Are they really neccessary?

PS The hub nut is the right size for getting the A frame ball joint back in.
Sit it under the joint and bish bosh it back if you haven't got a press.

Snap..... I have the same problem this weekend :)
After thinking I have sorted the rear knocking sound ( http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=2228 )
Well it had nothing to do with the props! On Sunday I started to hear the knocking sound again, after checking the props again and all was ok I descided to jack up the NS and check the wheel, and there was a lot of play, so I striped down and found the rear bearing was in a lot of pieces, and no sign of what should look like an oil seal. All repaced and put back together I took for a spin around the block! That knock sound was still there.......
Back on the drive jacked up the OS and this one was worse, both front and rear bearing was in little peices.
All replaced now and no knocking sound great...... for now :wink:

I drove to Devon last year and with 200 miles to go a strange bearing type noise happened, it went and came back again loads of times.
When I got to Devon Paul and I checked the wheel for play (I'd driven down after Paul so didn't check on route) and it seemed fine.
Ep 90 had leaked though.
I nipped to get some bits to do the oil seal (I usually have bearings in the back of the Disco) and all of a sudden it went from hardly any noise to absolutely dreadful noise as the disk was touching the calliper. It had obviously collapsed completely within 30 miles.
Goodness only knows where the rollers went to.
I suppose they could have been evenly spread when we tested it and then later all moved to one end race as the race was also severely damaged.
Everything changed in a field at the side of the caravan.

Blimey these bearings do seem to have issues ! and thought it was just me!
Ed, what grease did u put on yours?
I have attached a little piccy of the remains of my bearing , and also for you Frank, a piccy of my lovely new (southern based) communal hub nut spanner.

Hi Dave,
The remains of your bearing reminded me of the one I did on Litt-lun awhile back, that was completely shot too. :?
Make sure you clean that hub nut spanner before you lend it to me please, shocking to leave a valuable (and much needed) item in such a state. :wink:

Welcome to the "colapsted bearing club" I have one go at the start of the year and as I removed the hub my lad Lewis sayed "all the bullets have fallen out" a pile of rollers on the floor and a bit of twisted metal in the hub!!!!
I have my own hub nut spanner too :wink:
Check the others TODAY or you will be sorry :(

I stick high melting point grease in the bearings and removed the EP90 on the front and replaced it with one shot.
It seems Ok.
Looks like some water ingress in the photo Dave. Did you make sure you'd sealed the half shaft when you fitted it.
As Frankie noted. You'll be ask to leave the brotherhood if you leave the spanner in that state again.
Cleanliness is next to ....................................

PS I use a bit of hylomar on the half shaft. I spoke to some of the silicon sealer people and their products aren't oil resistant.

Bet you carn't guess what I did this weekend. :roll:
Towing the caravan I heard a small clicking noise,
First I thought I had a stone in the tyre, Wrong no
stone in it.... :shock: Got to the caravan site ok,
Next day Me and Bev striped it down and couldn't
see anything wrong with the wheel bearing other
than the lack of grease. :( Repacked it with grease
and stuck it all back together and the noise has now
gone... :D
Thats the RHF done in May and the RHR in July,
I think I will check the other two before I set off
for my holiday. :wink:

The only bits I was able to reuse from a failed bearing were hub brake drum and brake back plate :( The bent halfshaft is still stuck in the stub axle in the corner of the garage.

Well chaps
I have checked and regreased all of the other bearings - must be said that I didnt find any dry ones or any lacking in grease. thankfully.
A worthwhile exercise, so I can drive in the knowledge now that my bearings are fine (for now!)
Now, I wonder what will break or need replace next ? any guesses?

Anyone running a book?? I'll have a quid on a prop uj. They have to be the landrover's weakest link. Good job they're cheap.

all that distance appears to be making you very cheeky sir!!!
Its definately mine, all mine - you should look after your tools like I do!!
I put it down to bad packing, or maybe young Frank has it?!
ps when u are next about in the area could you trim my conifers back?
