Title: Series 3 with a transit engine
Post by: Fuddy as muck on May 03, 2006, 20:44:16
My series 3 has had a transit engine fitted at some stage and although it is capable enough on road (75mph tops) i'm wondering how far i can take it off-road. Its my first 4x4 and has been bought bought purely for fun. At the moment i'm just looking to take it mildly off-road as opposed to waist high in water or doing 80 degrees on its side  Like i said i'm just wondering how good the Tranny engine is for the Landy to go off-road.

It can't be any worse than the 2.25 diesel Landy engine.  Get in the mud and see how You go.

if i remember rightly the 2.5d transit engine werent actually that bad
a bit agricultural, but no worse than the 2.25 landy engine,
being honest, if you need more power than that has offroad, your doing something wrong

I'm feeling a happy chappy then seeing as it was only bought for an off road tool. Is there any chance that someone could send me in the right direction of where to buy a snorkel and any other off road things that i may need.

Got a mate with a 109" with a tranny engine fitted, fine off road and more than keeps up with those of us in standard engined series vehicles.

To sum it up, quite good on road, but lacks low down grunt off tarmac. Not a conversion I would do, but not so bad that I feel like doing anything about it in a hurry.

On road - It'll sit all day at 60 - 65mph giving 28 - 32 mpg.

Off tarmac - Ok, and has been into water over bumper level. Just lacks torque and needs to be revved.

BTW it's fitted in a S2a 109". A friend of mine also has one fitted in his 107" S1 and has had much the same experience with it AFAIK

I don't know about transit engines, but to be aware if the timing belt/chain is not enclosed as they can clog with mud, then you end up with no engine!! (A mate did his Iveco engine in that way).

It has a plastic cover, but isn't sealed. I've never had any problems with it. Though as with anything that has a belt if you don't know when it was last changed, change it. At least if the belt does break on a transit engine then they normally just break a couple of rockers and bend a couple of pushrods.
