Title: HELP !! TD5 needs looking at
Post by: Pentland on May 05, 2006, 12:56:52
My W reg TD5, new engine (verified) 60K ago appears to have blown a head gasket, but I'm not sure. Also according to main dealer, the"engine harness has oil contamination" & requires renewing. I booked it into a local garage, not a Land Rover specialist, as some of the work can be done under warranty, all they did was drive it in & out of their workshop for a week without touching it. Is the engine harness difficult to do & can any one recommend a RELIABLE specialist garage in or around the Reading area as the main dealer charges £90.00 per hour!!! So thats £180 just to get the head off. I am willing to throw the warranty away if I can get someone reliable to do it. I'm even willing to have a go myself with some experienced Landy owner handing me the right sized hammer!!!

If your head gasket is gone then you're best getting a stealer or specialist to do it IMHO.  Are you overheating, losing coolant, getting a pressurised system, got gunk on the oil filler etc?  If so, then it sounds like the gasket has gone.

As for the harness, you can check by removing the connectors at the ECU end (in the box where the jack sits).  It will be obvious if you have a problem.  If you do, then it's a very simple job to replace the injector harness (remove engine cover, remove camshaft cover swap out harness and refit everything), no more than 30 mins work.
