Hi all,
My first post and guess what it's about.....Rust!
I bought a defender (2.5TD 1987) about a month ago and have marvelled at how rust free the chassis was....but whilst having a cleanup yesterday I noticed that the panhard bracket on the axle is rusted to death, to the point that I think it's only the bolt holding it all together!
Am I correct in assuming that the bracket is an integral part of the axle?
What's the best/cheapest way of repairing it?
Cheers

You could get it welded up.........but the best way would be to find another axle cassing.
Where are you from ??.........O and welcome to the mud club

Cheers, I'm from near Huntingdon, Cambs
Are there suppliers of new casings or is it a case of try and find someone who's breaking a defender up?

I found the same thing on my axle. the bracket is a natural mud trap and rots away. Might be interesting for all coiler landy owners to go outside, take a pokey stick, and have a good root about behind the panhard bracket on the axle.
Then come back inside and report on MC. I bet theres some rot out there.
I just cut some appropriate size plate and rebuilt it.(with plenty of waxoil this time!!)

Get a new axle dont bother welding it when it go's boy will you now about it i was doing about 20 mph just turned out of davelandys pay and play site and thought the wheels had fell of. Welded it to get me home but went again couple of days later. If it is like mine didn't look bad just surface rust and small crack. Next thing i no it had ripped the steering wheel out of my hands.

:? that looks in better condition than mine, best be on the lookout then!

Toyota have just done a recall on 12-14 year old hilus surfs, cos part of the steering could potentially break. maybe we could get Landy to recall the front axle casing and all get a free one....?lol

Just to echo the others... if there is any doubt about the condition... don't drive it ! If that lets go when you are driving, you will have some *serious* problems

I have an idea whats like to let go. The bolt droped out of mine on my old RR about 3 months ago. Good job I was going slow.
