Title: 200tdi tappets

Hi All,

Has anyone removed the camshaft followers on a 200tdi?
I've had an annoying tapping (like a tappet) but after adjusting it came back again.
All of the rockers appear fine. There's a slight bit of play in the rocker bushes on the rocker shaft but it is very minute. You can just make out oil being pushed out when moving them side to side.
Tappet adjusters appear fine as do the pushrods.

So I'm about to try to get to the followers. Can they be brought straight out of the top with the pushrods removed?

There's an element of suction on each pushrod due to the oil but it doesn't hold them. I've heard of using a bit of grease on th eend of the pushrod to make the follower stick to the pushrod.

Does this work?

As the rad and everything else is out while I do other mods is the camshaft easy to get out?
How are you normally expected to remove the followers with the engine still insitu?

Im sure its a head off job............but mind the little retainer screws.

no its a brass sleeve that fitts into the block and then a peice of solid pipe just been cut ( put it in simple tearms :lol: )  for the follower need be careful as these can drop down into the block and sump if dropped  :shock:   but you deffenetly need to take the head off
BUT i stand to be corrected  :oops:  mike !! shhhh lol

that is the way i did it anyway and id be dam gutted if i took the head off for nuffing lol

yeh,im sure its head off,remove retaing screws & pray like B******* that you dont drop any bits

Damn!
Not what I was looking for in all honesty :(

I can't be sure there's even a problem with the followers so I reckon it'll go back together with new caps on the valve tips to see if it makes any difference. All of the rocker pads are absoluely fine but one of the rocker pads is showing that it has been only touching across half of the normal contact area. So it is possible that a cap is rotating, and isn't "flat" which causes the problem to be intermittent.
