Title: Speedo Gearing
Post by: Tyke on May 11, 2006, 11:30:56
Would it be right to asume that if bigger tyres are fitted and the speedo is running at about 10% error from standard then the milage being counted will also be out by 10%?

I heard you can get the speedo recalibrated . . . . . is this also true and who does it ?

Cheers

Yes the mileage will be out as well as the speed reading.

If/when you change the transfer box, to a 1.44:1 then the speedo gearing will come back in if you use the speedo gear from your 1.22:1 box.
I think mine reads about 2mph fast according to my GPS.

I spoke to Ashcrofts about this when I did mine and they said that if I supply them with the T-box ratio, type of gear box, diff ratios and tyre sizes then they could supply a speedo gear to suit.
With mine only being 2mph out then I've not bothered though.

Use the gps and put paint marks on the dial to let you know your true speeds

Cool, your a star fella.

I thought that would be the case. I'll keep it in mind when I get to swap the box and make sure the standard speedo gear goes back in.

Think I've thought through everything, now it's just a case of time and money to get the job sorted.

If the larger tyre you are changing to is still a standard landrover fitment (ie. changing from 205's to 265's) Then just change tho speedo drive gear in the transfer box. It takes 5 minutes and costs about eight quid.

Speedo calculator confirms what I thought . . . . it's about 10% out at the moment . . . . 70mph = 76mph . . . .

Not that I drive around at that speed on muds . . . . . well not all the time anyway . . . . That right Jim Willy? . . . . and deffo not on those square shaped Grizzly's
