The Gauntlet apears to have been thrown down.
Me and Datalas wil l be building a Lego 4x4 to go up against eachother on a small offroad course at the Birthday Bash. We are thinking of actually doing a proper competition now.
Its going to involve a small course possibly a challenge and would probobly be scored on completion, time taken, looks etc. We are talking simple controls but make it as elaborate as you like. If there are anough of each type we'll do K'nex and Meccano too.
So who's up for that? Lego can be had cheaply from Ebay and it can be done, I have two fully working 4x4 models aready, one fully diff'ed one not.

 cool ive tons of old lego up the loft at me mums :) gona go have a play at weekend ermmm i mean designing session
-
I'll pop my 2 candiates in the gallery :)
Currently the bes one keeps eating diffs and breaking down. Maybe its too accurate 8)
-
The construction guidelines will be posted shortly to ensure a level (ish) playing field.
Vehicles will be given a series of challenges and obstacles to traverse, including things like side slopes, ascents, descents, etc.
Get your brains working !!

Where's the pics ? :D

theres pics of evilgoat's latest in my gallery

hehe i am getting excited already, got loads of lego but no running gear, does it matter where the running gear comes from?? lol

Lego running gear :)
-
OK, i like the sound of that, is there any size limits etc....... lol
-
I think tim is gonna post some rules and regs.
But Small means fast and nible but its a crunch to get the gearing in. My little one will climb walls and do it quickly, but its too cramped to get front 4wd or steering in.
the larger one had loads of room but slow as a slow thing.

OK... here goes....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Birthday Bash 3 - The Lego Challenge
Official Construction Regulations
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
General
Vehicles in the event should be designed and built to manouver around a course of difficult terrain with a mixture of obstacles. It should be self propelled, requiring minimum human intervention to operate. Obstacles will include ascents, descents, side slopes, water crossing, slippery surfaces and others. Points will be awarded for completion of sections, in the event of a tie, the vehicle completing the course in the shortest cumulative time will be deemed the winner.
Wheels & Tyres
The vehicle should have some of these. Tracked vehicles are also permitted in the event. A maximum tyre size limit will be in force, set at 6 inches overall diameter.
Propulsion
The vehicle should be self propelled, carrying all motive power, fuel, batteries on-board. Vehicles must not employ any flammable fuel such as petrol, diesel, lighter fluid, LPG, AvGas, etc. unless it is contained within an FIA approved fuel cell and the vehicle is fitted with an on-board, plumbed-in fire extinguisher system. Other acceptable systems include Battery, Solar, Clockwork, Kinetic, Elastic Band, Flux Capactor, Perpetual Energy, Matter-Antimatter and Rodent power.
Drivetrain
Drivetrain design is generally free, with no limits placed on gear ratios, number of axles or driven wheels. Locking and solid differentials are permitted.
Dimensions
Vehicles should be within the following overall dimensions :
Length : 100mm - 400mm
Width : 50mm - 200mm
Height : 50mm - 180mm
Steering
The vehicle may have some method of steering control, but this will not be a requirement for entry. Sections will be designed such that no driver intervention is required.
Braking
Brakes are for girls.
Design
Points will be awarded for style, ergonomics, design and elegance. Additional points will be awarded for the use of over-complex engineering
principles for the sake of looks.
Recovery
In the event of a vehicle becoming stuck in a section, recovery by the driver will be allowed. The vehicle can be recovered to a point before the point where forward motion was lost for an additional attempt, or can be recovered to a point not more than 100mm further along the course.
Penalty points will be applied for any recovery, with a 'forward' recovery attracting the highest score.
Supplementary Regulations
Supplementary regulations and regulatory rulings may be applied at any point before, during or after the event by the panel of judges :-)

I knew that pot of anti-matter would come in handy
-
If I can get my beast up to 88.8 mph then theoretically I can be at the finish line as everyone else starts..... \:D/
But
I've re read the rules, and now can't enter..... Why no AVGAS, #-o AVGAS is cool and required to hit 88.8 mph with solid diffs and big tyres, so the flux capacitor can 'kick in', its quite safe in the right hands!
-
OK, i am now bidding on copious ammounts of lego! Only i have to do it twice cos dreadnought wants to play as well!
-
Should this thread not be sticky?
BTW me first lot of lego arrived today so am building the base of me vehicle :D

Any chance of running a childrens competition of just building a 4x4 out of Lego?
Conner has 2 huge draws of the stuff, but don't think he could master making it motorised!
Plus, can I enter our dog???????????? Well he is called Lego.
-
And winch recoveries?
-
Well i started building the one that came in the post today at 6pm, and i couldnt put it down!! Its now built and in waiting for some power :D
-
Mmm gonna have to find me some Lego, all mine is in Sussex at my parents house.

thats a silly place to have it. Did you not know many years ago you would be building a model 4x4 to go round a course??
-
Hi,
does the builder have to be the one who enters it - if so there may be a few Nottm Uni students around - apparently hubby will get some of his engineering students onto this straight away!!!!
I second the children's competition request - the girls are already planning theirs
Regards
Ela

I think a kids competition is a great idea. Doesn't have to go anywhere, just needs to look cool. The competition will be to build an off-road buggy of some sort. It can be as wacky, inventive and mad as you like. Points will be awarded for style :-)
In the adults competition, I guess the builder of the vehicle doesn't have to enter it.... if Nottingham Uni's finest want to put together an entry or two, it will be good to see a few more entries !

I read this thread late on Friday night. I has already caused me to be late out on saturday night and cancel my plans for tonight!! I loved Lego when i was younger and remembered why on Saturday afternoon!
Bidding on some stuff at the moment. I need more power!!!
May seem a stupid question but where is the birthday bash and when?

Have a look here : http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=25015
Be good to have you along !

Looks fantastic. I will be driving licenceless by then but if need be I'll push the car there :D
I looked at the clock last night after what felt like about 20mins of playing, I mean design and construction, and it was 2.43!!!! I went to bed. It's looking good now though. Gear box is done just got to try and work out how to do the front suspension.
-
Well I have one ready to run, small and reasonably agile, no ground clearance though :(
This bigger one is turning into a pain, tried to get two complicated. Had two LSDs, sterring and full suspention....
And it fell apart every 3 meters and was too slow, back to the drawing board :)
-
You have had it lads Ive got a Lego Unimog

lego has been brought up from sussex, need more gears and another motor though. Lego on eblag seems to be popular at the moment. ;)
