Title: Wet stuff
Post by: Stuart on May 21, 2006, 21:41:33
When i go near water and i don't mean deep water, my 200tdi charging light comes on and power steering goes hard   the belts seem to be tight so i wondered if its a commom problem and therefore an easy solution :?:

Might be worth taking the belts off, cleaning the pulleys & replacing with new belts.

the power steering belt pulley also drives the alternator, i found the belt was running in the bottom of the pulley when i had mine with the same symptom as yours and a new belt cured it for  while but its a bit of a failing of the design i think

My 200tdi disco does the same thing when i jetwash it. But after a few seconds, it clears. And mine has a new alternator and belt. :)

Yes it's common, check your belt is new and also the right width, too thin and it won't work (a common bodge).  Also check the pulleys are aligned properly and there is no grease on the running surface.  I cover mine in washing up liquid, every time it gets wet it cleans itself.
