Hi there, Last Sunday a Range Rover owner said to me Ha a Discovery is a poor mans Range Rover, now I know that there is no shame in being poor but honest. My reply to him was, a Discovery is a thinking man's Defender.
I am sure that some of you will have views to put across. So Discuss

Now, I've got a Range Rover & a Discovery so does that make me a rich poor man who does a lot of thinking? :-k

I have always heard the exspression a disco is a thinking mans defender the only thinking i do is can i get over that and wot mod next :lol: :lol:

I should think that the individual who offered the observation would have a much more fulfilling life if he was to reserve judgement on others and enjoyed himself more.
Who cares what anybody drives, all motor vehicles are merely peices of assorted metals and plastics and can be re-arranged very easily in a moment.

I don't need to think :D , just drive over it/through it and if i get stuck another Defender will have no trouble rescuing me :D

discovery is the thinking mans defender, but the defender is the tough guys freelander....

All this 'thinking man's Defender' and 'poor man's Discovery nonsense' only ever seems to be peddled by people with an inferiority complex..
When all is said and done, under the body shell they are much of a muchness ;-)

Its all the same with a different frock on aint it?
Bit heavy underneath, maybe seen better days, but with a change of clothes can become 'thinking man', 'rich man', or plain farmers daughter.

can anyone say that they enjoy grinding off rusted bolts and extracting snapped bolts. :cry:

I work in the automotive manufacturing sector and its all your fault that manufactures have so many variations on a theme. As far as LR go in my opinion you cannot beat a Series 1 it gets you from more A to B's than most other makes and models.
To take to extremes as far as cars go a Model T ford does the same as a Aston Martin but slower and in less comfort. But the consumer "you and I" always wants better and more for less hence Series/Defender and RR/Disco. The manufacture wants to release a "new" model but does not want to spend Millions on development and tooling costs but there comes a point when "mutton is dressed as lamb" and the manufacturer has to break new ground i.e. RR in the early 70's and Disco 3/RR today and hope its a success.
So think about that

I drive 1959 series 2 SWB .My personal opinion the definative Landy ever built.I also drive a 1990 Disco 200 Tdi .I know it was a parts bin kit but without it would Landrover have survived it sold in its Thousands from day one.It combined Range Rover chassis with a very adaptable body.The Discovery was bigger than the Range Rover it was a 7 seater from day one . But thanks to clever styling no body realised at the time.The Range Rover was king.I think that Land Rover produce the best of the field thanks to the skill in the company not that they company realise this its left to the enthusiast.Although now they are getting the idea by the fact they are remanufacturing parts for the classic Land Rovers.

D3 is 114"
Classic RR is 100" bar the LSE which is 108"
38A RR is 108"
New Range Rover (L322) is 108.5" AFAIK
RR Sport is 108"
A LR 90" is 92.9"
LR 110" is 110"
LR 127" and 130" - are both 127"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that it didn't sell at all well in the beginning and it nearly brought about the demise of the company. It was only after Land Rover won Exporter of the Year that sales picked up. This was due to them exporting all the Discoverys in stock to a compound in North Africa.
I wonder if they are still there?
p.s. this was a rumour that was going around at the time.

Hi there, I don't subscribe to the snobbishness of my motor is better than yours, it's just that a Disco suits my needs at the moment. It is a good daily driver, tows our 2/3 tons club trailer and does a bit of gentle off roading. For my off roading I would like a Series 88"er with parabolic springs. But unfortunatly my pocket won't stretch to a LR for that so a Suzuki Samurai has to suffice. I must admit it is the most fun you can have and keep your clothes on and at a price I can afford. The Suzuki is also trailered to events behind my wife's Disco, so I can really go for it and not worry about having to drive it home.
I must admit I enjoy the frendly banter that goes on between 4x4 owners as long as we don't take each other too seriously.

I look at it this way,
A great number of people judge others by the car they drive, and the way they dress, and make assumptions,
but turn up anywhere, wedding, public school cricket match, and posh hotel in a 10 year old car, and you are nobody, just Mr Joe Bloggs, 10 year old Defender, and you are somebody, as the poor, and rich alike drive them, as they have character, and soul, which 99% of other cars dont.

Range Rovers and Discos are just fat defenders that have more things to go wrong (and cost loads when they do). As for discos being thinking mens defenders, what are the thinking about? The rate of depreciation. I also find that too much thinking gets me in trouble, like this post probably will.
Having said all that i'll take any green oval over a jap motor. I take that back i wouldn't have a freelander! :D :D

Thing is i bet most series owners have a second car. No offence to series/defenders, i love 'em but theres no way i would do a 6 motorway slog or daily commute round the north circ in one. my rangie is at home cruising at ** on the outside lane with 3 series as it is laning, thats why i have one

That is wierd, the guy I've bought Lucifer off also had a Senic.
For now it's mine and my dads only car, and tbh it seems alright at speed, sat at 55 with not a huge amount of noise.

Mmmmmmmmmm, just the right price to take it into a muddy field and roll it a few times.
I feel that the Disco and RR development have missed something. Realistically L/R's popularity has come from its everyday use and versitility.
Thankfully the Defender is still around (for the time being anyway).
Maybe they should have kept production of the Disco Series II on the side?

Missed what exactly?
The newer style of models are built for the market that buys them and last time i checked the market was buying them, so there must be something right about the newer models even if they don't appeal to owners of the older vehicles.
Personally i think the latest RR is very useful because its made the P38 RR far more appeling (something to compare it to other than the RRC).
