Title: Tyre Choice

I'm looking to get some All Terrain tyres and have pretty much narrowed it down to a choice of two:

BFG AT

or

Grabber AT2

Which should I go for??

As far as I can work out, BFG are more expensive but should last longer, but how different are they on and off-road?

Any thoughts appreciated :)

I'm currently running Goodyear AT/R which are better on dry tarmac than the BFGs, not quite as good on wet tarmac, but about equal in the mud. And they have lasted amazingly well.

I think I'll try Matador's Izzarda AT next.

I know what you mean Bully - am tempted by muds but do spend most of my time on the roads (unfortunately) and just don't think it would be worth running them.

I'd also been looking at Cooper STs but don't know how to edit the poll question! :oops:

Had them about 10 months now and they show almost no wear after 8000 miles and worked everywhere they went at the DOC national off road course.

Very quiet too

Much better value for money as I have the 255/65 r16's and 5 of them cost less than Ã‚Â£400 fitted

Thanks for letting me know Neil, but I'm definitely going for ATs. Your new toy looks awesome by the way - enjoy!

Thanks Steve - that's good to know they perform well and am still really tempted by them. Where did you get them from?

So far I've found a mobile fitting place that will supply and fit the BFGs at Ã‚Â£104 each, or I can get the Grabbers for Ã‚Â£80 and then find somewhere to fit them! (That's for 245/75R16)

Post by: Big Rich on June 13, 2006, 18:25:03: I have BFG Ats for road use and some off road but have BFG Muds for when I want to play harder or muddy places.

BFG ats last a long time and handle veryt well. Grip is very good too. MUds are better for grip in mud etc but do have some road noise. Handling is the same exept on wet roads.

My advice you pay for what you get.

BFG have more ply too. Less chance of a flat tyre.

I reckon I will be going for the BFGs - just have to get on and order them and am just trying to decide when to have a go at trimming my rear arches a bit so the 245/75 don't touch when off road.

have always had BFG ATs, current ones have been on for 2 years and three are still going strong - one is being replaced due to a screw embedded and 6 other holes!!! wondered why it never seemed to hold the air!! it has taken me approx 6 months to get this checked!

have always found them great in 95% of driving situations

I had 5 fitted early last year for Ã‚Â£99 per tyre inc. disposal of old tyres, tracking & balancing (MJA Land Rover, Bromsgrove). Done about 15,000 miles on them, showing very little signs wear.

Good road manners, and not let me down so far. As I only run 1 set of wheels/tyres I needed something that would suit every occasion.

Just noticed you are in Surrey - I would try AJS4x4 Tyres who are near Reigate.

Very helpful, really know there stuff. Been in the off roading business for years and years and good value too!

Cheers Henry - have tried AJS already - they were a little bit more expensive than Nene Valley - but a tad easier for me to get to! :)

I seem to hear the same thing everywhere - AT2s good, but not as strong as BFG and lower mileage potential, though prob still about 50-60k.

Post by: alaric on June 14, 2006, 23:28:07: I've had BFG's on my Pajero for a couple of years now, and done between 40,000 and 50,000 miles on them - I'd say they're now about 1/2 worn - very pleased with them both for wear, road manners and off-road performance.

NO I'm after those :lol: Im just trying to sort out a way of getting them down to me without a long journey to get them!!!

I have wondered about BFG's and other makes as I will only be doing some lanes on my road tyres as I have a set of Grizzly claws for pay n play sites so not to damage my alloys and road tyres when playing. Only takes 30-45 minutes to do a complete swap.

I'm sad and like the look of the BFG AT tread too :roll: :oops:
