Title: Power steering kaput?

Hi Fella's,
Driving home from work tonight and my power steering just failed! No warning, no noises, fine til i stopped at traffic lights, not working after pulling away! [Arms ache now]

I suspect the pump, just want 2nd opinions before i book it in somewhere.
Belt is on and turning, fluid is up to max, but fluid doesn't seem to move in the pot at all, even under high revs.

What do you reckon?

which model disco ya got?  i,ve replaced the pump on my 300tdi as it had failed but it was still pumping, the shaft was coming out of the body making the belt run off track all the time but it didnt give up completly, if its suddenly gone it could be the pump has had a fit  :?

is the belt intact?

also check for leaks too

AND count how many bolts it is :)

Think that both Beast5680 and myself were sending posts to each other earlier this year on this subject.

With mine(Disco 300tdi) the shaft and pulley were coming out of the pump. This caused the pulley to be out of line with the others by about 1/4" and in turn shredded 1/4" off the belt.

I managed to keep tapping the pulley/shaft back into the pump until one day when I turned into the works carpark the power steering pump failed.

Ended up buying a new one from Paddocks at a cost of about £87.00 and fitted it, with the help of my 12yr old son, in one very cold evening after work.

Where I work we have people with numerous engineering skills. So I took in the old pump to see if it was able to be refurbished, just wasn't worth the agro(but have heard that the 200tdi can be) Think that the key/keyway on the shaft had worn away and when we pulled on the shaft it came straight out of the pump casing.

As I see it, it was the belt that was keeping the shaft/pulley in place and I was lucky that it didn't come out and go into the radiator or intercooler!!

Did it today, p**s easy job. Looked harder than it was.
All is fine and dandy now   :D

Glad everything went o.k. and your up and running again.

Only problem I had was with the bolt heads rounding off. Over came that with the use of a long screwdriver and hammer!!
