right , almost had enough now  :evil:
i replaced the rad, and water pump the other day along with the P gasket, no problems there. cleaned the intercooler lovely black gunk came out. blanked off the egr and replaced the top hose with a non egr type. definately more power now.
but and there always is, on replacing the aux belt she has developed a very high pitched squeel and sort of ticking noise.
if i spray wd40 on the pulleys it stops for a while then returns. it seem to be from the ribbed side of the belt and predominately from the water pump pulley is causing the noise.
i thought it might have been the pump but then appling wd40 to the pulley itself it stops. 10 minutes later its back. it gets worse on acceleration. it sounds like a slipping belt at times ( the squeel) but then stops and becomes a frantic tapping / ticking noise.
not good when you arrive home off nights at 6, neighbours must love me  :twisted:

does any of this make sense to anyone or is it back to the garage and more money  :evil:

Hi Jim,

When I had belt noise I replaced the serpentine belt and gave the pulleys a good wash down with hot soapy water...  never heard a thing after that.

Sounds like the bearing has gone in the aux belt tensioner - you can pick up a bearing kit off that auction site for about a tenner or a new tensioner for about 40-50 quid.
Replacing the bearing is a bit fiddly as the circlip is a plain one with no eyes to remove it.

check the belt is running square on the pulleys, when my power steering pump shaft started to go it made the pulley run out of line making the belt squeal like a banshee

Hi.
   Had the same problem with a geiuine L.R. belt. tried putting a drop of water on the belt with the engine running, no noise, changed the belt for a serpentine, no noise since. hope this helps.

Had exactly the same problem, belt dresser cured it but only for short periods, like mentioned earlier clean the belt and pulleys - my tensioner had black deposits which were hardish but easily cleaned off. However this is a common problem and a more expensive belt with a different part number is available, it`s a softer compound. I went down this route and had no further problems.

Check that the tensioner pully is aligned correctly.
Looking from drivers side (RHD) follow the line of the belt as it goes over the tensioner pully and onto the alternator.
If it is slightly out a line then it will cause the belt to slide across the tensioner pully and cause the squeel.
You fix it by putting a thin shim behind the tensioner, where it meets the front of the engine block to pull it back in line.  :wink:
