At least that's what I presume....
Headlights like candles.
But they get brighter when:
I pull the handbrake on
I switch the wipers on
I use an electric window
The temp gauge is also sitting slightly higher than usual, and the red warning light above it flashes on its own, and when applying the brake/using windows etc.
All syptoms of an earthing problem - but can anyone suggest which particular one mightbe at fault??

We've just re-earthed our headlights. Cut the earth wire from the back of the lights and joined on a new heavy duty wire which we have earthed to the radiator mounts on each side. Made the world of difference.
Have you got a fuse box under the bonnet, or fuesable links? If it's fuseable links then it might be worth unwrapping them and seeing if any are on their way out. You can either re-solder them or replace them with inline fuses.

usual rules on earth straps
check and clean
E strap from battery to engine or chassis
E strap engine to chassis
E strap chassis to body
another method
use a jump lead on the battery earth
clamp the other end to the metal shaft of a screw driverand touch bare metal
on the body and chassis
when you pass the weak spot where the earth is failing the lights should brighten
hope this helps

The same thing was happening to my lights when I got the car, :( could not sort it out so asked a very nice man! He pointed out that the earth strap to the body was not connected just behind the battery. Fixed it, I can now see where I am going
-
Could this also be the reason that I go through about four rear near side brake lights blowing a year please?
-
Hi Toger
Generally loose or poor connections are the cause of lamps blowing.
You might have a bit of corrosion on the lamp holder or a poor earth connection.

Spot-on!
Body earth behind the battery wasn't connected. As to why the symptoms only showed up recently, who knows .....
