Hi All,
After a very interesting chat this evening with a friend about towing and Land Rovers. The Point that was made is this.:
Can you drive a Series 2 / 3 109" 12 Seater Station Wagon on a Cat B car licence or do you need a Mini Bus Licence D1. Even thouugh you use the landy as a private car. or do you just take out the rear seats and make it a 6 seater.
All this is that you passed your test after 1 Jan 1997
Interesting ???????

had that prob with my dads 110 csw when i passed my test, removed the rear bench seats making it a 5 seater n that was me driving it legally
-
this was discussed somewhere else too, but i dont think anything was decided either way
it *might* be legal so long as its for personal use. but is it worth risking your license for?
-
If the V5 says more than you are allowed, then removing the seats has no effect unless you get the V5 updated as well. It's the V5 data that they'll book you against.... And of course, your insurance will be invalid as you have modified the beast without telling them!
-
I'm having the same issue with my 110 CSW - The simplest option is to take the two rear benches out so you end up with 6 seats and a massive boot.
Although, the V5 on my 110 is blank under seating capacity so I'm thinking I might try for a while and claim they are not seats, as it's not like they are individual or anything.
For the record, if you pass after 1997 you can only drive up to 9 seats on your car license or you need a D1.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your replies, bit of a nest of worms this one, Just got off the phone to the DVLA and a very nice lady said :-
If you passed your test after Jan 1997 you can only drive a vehicle with a Max of 8 Seats and not weighting more 3.5 Ton. or you need a D1.
And if your V5 Seating Shows (Blank) you can remove the rear seats to 6 Seats and you are ok Max 8 Seats
Anyone know the Kerb Weight of a 109" Station Wagon. As i do not have any Handbook.
Confussed i Am !!!!!!
Thanks All
Brian

To my knowledge the 110 CSW is 2.3 tons, and a Series 2/2A/3 88 is 1.7 tons. So I would say a 109-inch SW is about 2ish tons.
-
Not wanting to be boring but the 88" is about 1.3 ton and the 109" is about 1.75 ton. The lightweight was badly named as it was only very slightly lighter than the standard 88"
-
Wasn't the LWT actually Slightly Heavier until you removed the panels? Just what I seem to have read.
-
The lightweight was heavier than the standard 88 when you have the full bodywork on. It only became 'lightweight' when you removed all the bodywork apart from the essentials. So off came the top of the bulkhead (with the vents), ragtop off and tilt off, other panels bits off (including the doors I think) and many other parts removed.
EDIT: Just looked in the Lightweight User Manual I have, and the Lightweight is listed as 1,456kg (12v) and 1,510kg (24v) when running with coolant, oils and 20 gallons of fuel.
It is also listed as 1,206kg (12v) and 1,274kg (24v) when stripped for air-portable use (with spare wheel removed) and with 5 gallons of fuel.
