would be interested to hear what you have to say, being a virgin to landys i want to make the right chioce. I have seen a turboo diesel 90, H reg, 70k onthe clock good chasis and bulkhead, took it for a test drive yesterday, drives nice, abit different to what i drive now (Seat Leon Cupra) but i am sure i will get used to it again (used to drive them in the Falklands thats were i got biten by the bug) i have also been advised not to buy the first one i see, but with limited places to look and knowledge went to a specilaist, i have got the price down from 4,000 to 3,800 but recon he will come down to 3,500 for cash, fingers crosed.

know some1 who sold a good H plate 90 tdi for 2500 with a years ticket etc

I'd instantly say....."Don't buy the 1st one" :D
You could get one same age with a few Offroad mods on it for that price privately.
I bought the 1st one i saw..... and have ended up spending another £3.5k - £4k to get it sorted and it still aint finished.

i would not say over priced as they are going for all diffrent amounts trust me i have been doing some serious looking :roll:

I agree, that seems overpriced. Have you tried ebay (I know some can be far away, but its sometimes worth travelling for the right one) or keep your eye on the "for sale" section, the mud clubbers generally know the value of their vehicles & usually don't tend to overprice!! (too much :lol: )

my wife bought me the first one she saw.
then i had to replace the bulkhead and spend two solid weeks welding the chassis.
but me and the antichrist fell in love instantly, so it was a labour of love anyway.

Prices vary country-wide so it's not that easy to tell. Log onto E-Blag just to watch what they go for, then you'll be much more knowledgeable.
How trustworthy is the dealer? is it worth the extra grand for the peace of mind or are they a bit, how can I put it, dodgy?

Oh, and as my mate often says, go along and kick him in the nuts. If you think he'll take £3,500 then offer him 3, hell offer him 2.8 and watch his face. Be prepared to walk away with the cash and see if he'll negotiate at all.
There are always others, it's hard I know once you've test driven the car and decided you like it, but I let my mate talk about the cash for me on the LSE and he saved me the thick end of 2K just by being hard-nosed.
Don't look at it with rose-tinted specs either, it may be mint but look for the faults and point them out, if you read a few magazines then you'll know how much things cost to fix, get them fixed before you buy or the price dropped accordingly.

One bit of advice I'd offer, and this was learnt the hard way #-o .
If you are looking at a TD powered landy, not including the TDi. Check for signs of heavy breathing from the oil filler. Best way to do this is with the engine idling remove the filler cap and hold your hand over the filler to form a airtight seal. If there is alot of pressure build up quite quickly chances are the engine is tired. I'd walk away unless the landy is very cheap and your up to fitting new pistons.
Expect a bit if pressure build up, all TD lumps breath, its what they do.
There is a known weakness in the old TD's where the pistons can become cracked due to the extra stresses caused by the turbo.
The bottom end can become pressurized by exhaust gasses passing through a cracked piston or warn rings, eventually it will start throwing its oil back in to the air filter through the breathers.
Personally i would look for a 200TDi if your budget can stretch that far, more power and better fuel economy. Or a V8 on LPG :twisted: .

Turn up in overalls and produce a LARGE hammer.. if the seller wont let you 'test' the chassis with it - WALK AWAY!
If he says 'it'll pass another MOT no problems' take him up on it - offer to buy for full price if YOU can take it for an MOT AND if it passes.. if not WALK AWAY...
As said before if its up for 3 offer 1.5, then see if he is willing to haggle...there are plenty of landys out there...series 3's for a few hundred, same for disco's 90's from 500- 15000.
decide now what model you want , and what engine etc.. then stick to that and make a budget.

what a difference a little knowledge has. i have just been to see a landy found on e blag, thanks to all of you who helped i could tell it was a dog. smoke coming from every were, oil and fluids all over the place , doors gone, squeeks and groans from where there should be none. so thanks again for all your help and i hope i find one soon in better shape. :oops:

Just keep looking, there's bound to be a minter out there somewhere for you.
and £3000 for a TD (I presume you mean 19J) is Wayyy overpriced, I got an F Reg 19J 110 for £1800 and it needs very very little other than a good clean up.
Also, don't let these lot drag you away from the TDs towards the TDis, if well looked after the TD is a cracking engine, cheaper to repair than a TDi, and will leave you more money for mods ;)

What do you mean it was a dog?, i thought all landys were like that :D
