Just done a quick calculation. Must be bored!
Although it can be manipulated in more than one way, I reckon the surface pressure is less for a 4x4 tyre than a horse shoe. Using a rough estimate of a 235 tyre contact patch, I reckon my Suzuki creates about 6psi surface pressure, whereas a 6" diameter horse shoe is about 8psi. To do the job properly, you would need to work in the actual tread pattern of the tyre. But I reckon, even allowing for the gaps between the tread, they work out about the same.
An average walker would create about 4psi, I reckon. Not the huge difference that you might expect.
Anyway, I think I should go and do some more work before I go home!

I 'guess' that my Isuzu has a ground pressure of 19.86psi.
It gives a good reason for sinking in wet ground.

Jokes aside, if the calcs are correct, it makes us look quite low impact doesnt it. Itd be good to check the figures , and compare bobble hat, to horse, to mountain bike, to trials bike , to 4x4, to tractor.
I bet a mountain bike has a high ground pressure. Man+bike, and a smaller footprint than a mans foot..........

I seem to remember this was studied a couple of years ago, and it was found that the worst was
mountain bike,
then,
Trail bike
horse (not pony)
tractors
people
4x4's
However a lot depended on the type of surface, and I think the tests were done on a normal grass field.
Sure it was published in one of the 4x4 mags
Has now been proved that walkers with "ski poles" are now causing thousands of Pounds worth of damage in the Lake District .

Thats me F###ed then seeing as I get involved with most of those activities. The only one I don`t do is tractors :shock:

Nice to se that Steve's (V8Moneypit) Saturdays at work are so eventfull, save for "surface presure" calculations and some idiot with the wrong clutch! for his SANTANA SJ......
I should go laning now, technically the least surface presure I will ever create, (no Gearbox, Clutch, Front or Rear Drive shafts, Transfer Box and a bucket load of bolts, nuts and washers) Nice weight reduction!

Saturday's at work can be either way. Sometimes really busy, other times quiet........ last Saturday was actually quite busy, but I couldn't be bothered to do anything!! In any case, I kept getting interupted by someone asking about Suzuki clutches :P :lol:

Of course, my calcs are flawed in many ways. It was just a quick excersise 'cos by brain was going numb!
The way the pressure is applied dynamically makes a huge difference to the damage to the surface. If a human was to just stand still, it would have virtually no impact at all, but if he or she was to swivel round on their heels, it would obviously cause damage. Equally, a tyre in motion has a completely different effect to a static one.......
