Does anyone know if the TD (19J) has the ability to connect a Tachometer (Rev Counter) to, as I reckon it'd be a good investment.
And if so, what would I need (besides a dial!)
-
Was looking to do the same on mine (TDi)
You will need a diesel rev counter, a petrol rev counter wont work as they require a different signal.
On Land Rovers with pre TD5 engines, i.e. TD and TDi the tachometer takes it's signal from the alternators 'W' terminal. A TD5 tacho wont work either as it is driven by the ECU.
You will need a 52mm guage if you are fitting it to the standard 110 dash. I have been trawling eBay but diesel tachometer are few and far between.
I have a link somewhere for a company that sells VDO gauges especially for Land Rover diesels, as far as I can remember I think they were £90 + postage. Ill dig it out when i gat home.
As for fitting it's straight forward, only five connections a 12volt pickup to power the gauge, 12volt in to the lighting circuit for the backlight and one signal cable to the 'W' terminal on the alternator. Simple as that.

You need one like this ....

Just done a quick Google search and found the company I was on about here http://www.croytec.co.uk/rev_counters.htm They supply them with a full fitting kit and instructions, but be prepared they aint cheap expect at least the wrong side of sixty quid.

Thinking of the same thing. I was told about these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8077229717&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I was planning to bracket mount it between the side of the dials and the Radio so size isn't a major pressing issue.
Any know how far the Rev gauge would have to go and where the Redline is ect...
Thanks for the help so far,
David.

Redline is about 4500-4800 rpm
I've just fitted one of the gauges shown in that ebay link
Be awear that most rev counters won't work with a diesel, as most use a signal from the coil
You need a diesel specific tacho which takes its signal from the W terminal on the alternator
-
Yeah I see, I would possible want a bigger one as I don't want to go moving the dials round in the dash.
Thanks anyway,
David.
P.S. Redline 4500? According to Haynes peak power is at 4k!
-
I've not needed to go over 2500 rpm yet (70 on M-Way) so i wouldn't worry too much about the redline
-
I'd just feel better driving it if I had a visual representation of the revs rarther than going by the engine note - If I have the radio on or something that could be disasterous.
-
That was the reason i fitted mine
It surprising how little the engine needs to be revved, less then 2k in everyday running, up to about 2.5 on the Mway
-
Just a thought
If you want something a bit bigger, have a look on ebay for a rev counter from a diesel Smart Car
They are about 65mm diameter and come in a pod
Again, be sure it's the diesel version (only goes to about 5 or 6k)

2500RPM equals 70MPH!!
My Td5 is showing 2000RPM at 48MPH
