Ok not stricktly defender by given the LWB have them fitted I guess I'm more likely to strike luky here.
My 101 has Sailsbury Diffs frotn and rear and has developed a whirr from the front Diff.
I've removed the prop and gone for an run and the whirr is still evident.
I've jacked up one wheel and recorded the clunking that is emitted from the Diff as the wheel is turned backwards (most cluncking) and forwarwds where it cluncks to a lesser degree..
http://www.zen79997.zen.co.uk/diff/diff.MOV This is a quicktime movie file and 20meg so may take a while to download - sorry it's all my Kodak camera does.
Is this to be expected? like normal?
If it's not normal suggestions as to the failure appreciated.

A whirring noise normally means the input bearings are on there way out. Usually louder under acceleration.

Oddly it seems to shut up going uphill or at least it did while the prop was on and under load... could be sumat to do with the suspension height and the effect on any slack in the pinion I guess.
