Title: Spotlight bar for winch bumpers
Post by: Tyke on July 04, 2006, 12:00:58
Anyone know of a spotlight/A-bar that will fit a typical 300TDi Discovery HD winch bumper with EP9 winch fitted. Looked at Innovation and doubt they will fit properly.

Failing that, any other winch bumpers with integral A-bar, preferably not tubular ones.

I've got a BRB winch bumper fitted, from David Bowyer, and used a standard 90/110 A-bar for the spots.
The A-bar just bolts through the top of the bumper and the top is just level with the highest part of the bonnet.

Hmmmm!!!

Looked at yours before Budgie . . . . . Like it

Was advised that Defender A-bars would be too tall and someone said something about if they come above the height of the bonnet you could get issues with your insurers.

Looking for something not too bulky and a combination of regular winch bumper and A-bar appeals to me. Finding a suitable bar has proved harder than I expected however.

Looking like it may have to be a 'cut'n'shut' job. Hate cutting up new gear but if that's what must be done, so be it. Best nip down my mates and take a few measurements before commiting to something.

If you're worried about the height then here's a couple of other shots of mine that give you a better idea, I don't have a side-on shot though.  :(

They could be the same, although mine seem to have a slightly tighter radius, maybe just an optical illusion.  :?

I wanted to go for the BRB bumper with Roo-bars but because the winch I have has a bridge type switch gear then that fouls the cross bar on the roo-bars so I had to go this way.

Nice one guys.

Den, that pic looks like yours is a defender one as well then. Simply bolted in place on top of the bumper. Getting me re-thinking now . . . . Oh! btw who did the bumper?

Reckon I'd best get the tape measure out again and go do some measuring up. I'm looking to improve the approach angle somewhat so the A-bar fitted in my avatar, (Rebel 4x4),  is coming off. Whilst I'm at it I would like to fit a winch but don't want to loose my  low spotlights so an a-bar solution seems the only way.

Improving the approach and junking the a-bar fitted has become a necessity since I bent the bar and bumper rather nicely last night crossing a ramp and ditch - at least it did no other damage so it did it's job on the protection of the front - ain't it a bitch when you go that extra step too far, I knew it was steep but hey, we've seen worse . . .

Budgie, If the winch doesn't have 'bridge' switch gear, I take it the A-bar could be a fair bit lower then? . . . that could influence my choice of winch.

No the bridge only effected the roo-bar version of the BRB bumper because it has a crossbar right where the winch bridge goes so the winch doesn't fit that perticular bumper.

The A-bar I fitted remains the same height whether the winch has a bridge or not. You could always chop the feet off, reduce the height of the up-rights on the A-bar and weld the feet back on again.

Yeah - some pretty cool looking set-ups there guys.

Looks like a defender bar may be going on then by the look of some of your motors.

Might give it a chop and re-weld the feet back on but there again I might not. Reckon they look pretty good as they are.

Cheers for the help and advice guys - it's appreciated
