Here we go.
Series 3 SWB 1983 diesel used fairly regular for work and Play days. Was recently having a little difficulty gettiing 1st and 2nd ie not finding the gate and the odd crunching but thought hey its an old landy.
After filling up with diesel pulled away put it into second and.................. thats were its stayed. I was able to use the clutch so crawled home but cannot move the gear lever out of 2nd gear.
Any suggestions on what to check/stripdown first.

Keep the gear lever, strip the rest down :)
I would check the clutch operation first, It sounds like the clutch is not disengaging properly and not allowing you to change gear.
After that, Check your gearbox oil too... May be worth draining it out and looking for bits of gear, but I think it's more likely to be a clutch issue.
Is it a Hydraulic clutch or mechanical on a series?? (No joke, I've not looked at the mechanics of a Landy 'cept the blasted handbrake)

have you given the gear box an oil change first? also see if theres any bits in the old oil.

take the center floor out and take the top off the gear box and check the selector rod bolt is still in place

Thanks for the replys. I've drained a bit of the oil to check for loose debris and to make sure its got oil in. Apart from it being black and maybe a little on the low side it seams ok. I will get some fresh oil and do a compete drain and refill tomorrow along with checking the selector rods.

I had this problem with my series 3 and it turned out to be knackered clutch release bearings!!!

Sorted for now !!!!!!!!!! After stripping out all the front floor and removing at least an inch of MUD straw and other rubbish i finally found the selector rod. After a bit of a clear out, oil up and gentle force its freeeeeeeee.
