If anyone's interested

Lidl have bolt croppers 18" in today at wait for it £3.99
A metric tap and die set for £4.99
Nowhere near the price of professional stuff but they might get you out of the brown smelly stuff at some point.

The tap and die set sounds good. Personally I like the gadgets that Aldi sell; eg a 1.5hp compressor - £70. Exactly the same as the Clarke one at £110ish.
