Good evening, had a kinda problem for a little while now, the alternator belt slips/squeals, as this is happening the rev counter is at zero, it has an attempt or or two then "kicks in" and all is fine, this usually happens if the vehicle has been idling or the fans running for a while, never had it happen when out n about on a run, i have done the obvious like check the belt, which was ok but changed it any how incase it had become varnished on the edges, also roughed up the pulleys, they had no signs of contamination on them, BUT pretty much @ the end of play at slab common today the tacho was at zero for good , also this problem of belt squeel was not evident, checked battery voltage which was 11.98 @ idle unloaded, but checked of the back of the alternater n was 9.44 volts
then decided to drive home, seemed fine (about 25 miles ish) but in the daylight so no lights used, so the question is alternator and or earths??? had a quick wiggle of them today and seemed tight should i remove the battery lead and the one that goes to the near side top wing (are ther any more?) and try again or just cough up for a new alternator?? many thanks guys n girls P.S its a 1991 v8 inj disco manual g/box [/b]

Sounds like alternator to me. Should be at about 14 volts - so should the voltage measured across the battery - maybe 13 with lights/fans on etc

Yep, sounds like the alternator, that said was it running or stalled at the time?
I have electric fans and after a days laning in the peaks (January mind) my new belt was smoked because of the fans. The alternator is fine, the belt just wore in too quick and screwed the adjustment, it started slipping and goodnight Vienna, it's now lying in a ditch somewhere

sounds like the bearings in the alternator are siezing up.
so its recon/new alternator. but if your good with a spanner you could change the bearins your self, i would, and while your at it put a new brushpack/regulator in it and youve got a recon alternator for about £30.

RIGHTO THEN PART 2 :?
Bit the bullet and brought a brand new alternater, came in a britpart box, fitted it tonight. (the nut on the pulley of the old one was a tad tight to say the least) , works great if the revs are over 1500, under that it doesnt charge :( if the revs are brought up slightly you can hear the alternater come under load and charges fine, any clues?? checked all connections were correct and tight  Many thanks

sounds like you have the thin wire on the wrong terminal, not sure as to the exact letters on it, but try plugging the thinner wire onto the other terminal.
