Title: Side exit exhausts ??
Post by: bullfrog on July 12, 2006, 22:37:51
Are side exit exhausts legal.
I am buying a 90 and the tail pipe points to the side a bit as standard and I plan to have a 3.5" pipe exit through the rear quarter. 8)
Is this legal ?
Thanks

Yes its legal and is a popular mod, places like devon 4x4 have them on their truck as far as i know, however make sure its done properly/well as otherwise youll get horrendous vibration and noise from the panels.

if the exhaust exits on the near side of the vehicle, yes it is illegal!for obvious safety reasons, example; if the car back fires and spits out a flame,it's likely to burn the people on the pavement etc.dumby nearside exists are legal tho.off side perfectly ok!hope this helps

I have done several over the years and did one on a rangie a short while back.
Just wanted to check as this will be for me ! :)
I did read somewhere that certain clubs/events dont like them ?
I would be useing H/D rubber mounts and at least a 10mm gap all round.
I understand the back box on V8 90s is straight through so I may "remove" the centre box and see how it sounds. Could allways fit a straight through box in its place !

keep the centre flat box & remove the back box (makes the pipework easier)  & could do this (http://members.mud-club.com/galleryimages/5afbe5412cf89716cfe447b5957ebbd3.JPG)

Saw that before in previous posts.
I see D44s 90 runs straight through .
I Just like the way side exit looks
I did consider stacks through the bed but they seem a bit "convoy" if you get my gist :?

My series 3 exits on the nearside, my understandinf is that it is ok as long as it doesn't protrude .  I hope so anyway as it hasn't been mot'd yet.

On a V8 you're best binning the back box and keeping the centre, or fit one from a TDi as they are bigger/free flowing I'm told.  Sounds loverly if your engine is on song otherwise it booms a bit (ours used to when it needed a valve).

what does a diesel sound like when it's got larger manifold and exhaust system?

You can certainly tell the difference between one on a mini 1.3 petrol with 2" system for example and tail pipes on kiddy cars sound like farting :D

Good usually but some of the stainless systems that are available resonate badly, sound terrible and cause other problems through the vibration.

Mines 1.7 Dti(isuzu)
straight thru 2" bore stainless pipe, no silencer, sounds lovely.
A little burble as the turbo spools up, and a healthy roar ALL the time.

Yes mate, it started as a straight thru pipe running from the engine, along the near side chassis rail (slightly higher & about 3" away), under the battery/seat box & out behind the rear b/head. However, when I got everything finished & started using it on the road, the straight thru pipe was just tooooo loud  , so I cut the pipe & installed a small straight thru silencer (think it was off some sort of VW). The silencer makes all the difference, still got a nice note but you dont get pedestrians standing & staring in disbelief!!
