I am after a winch for general offroad use.
Its for a 90 V8 .
I dont plan on doing events but may do later.
I may leave it on truck if I sell it it and buy suitable type for rangie then.
Its mainly for recovery on playdays and possibly some tree work !
I may progrees to events later so maybe buy right one now rather than later ??
What size should I go for ??
Would a 6000 lb be ok, or a 9000lb or should I go for a 12000lb and keep it for rangie too ?
I may get 2 as might get better deal !

9000lbs or 9500lbs
1.5 x the gross weight of the motor is i beleive the rule
many cheaper 10-12000lbs winches tend to be ssssllllllloooooowwwwww

Just buy a Warn,Superwinch or Tmax and have done with it. 9000 really is what you need or an 8274-50...if you want a real quick winch.

Means According to my calculations (110 Gross weight 2950kgs according to Haynes) I need a winch with at least 9754.5lbs of pulling power, looks like the £149 2000lb one is out :(

We have had this debate several times on Birty's.
The general opinion is that Warn are good but expensive and it's arguable that they are worth the extra cost. There is a place for budget ones but they can be unreliable and getting spares can be a problem.
Many in the club use Superwinch and rate them VERY highly. One of the best suppliers is Rebel 4x4.
9000lbs is thought to be the best option.

I had an 8274 and sold it ! Duh :(
I was not sure on the poundage required for the 90.
9000 or 12000 then !

ep9 well up to the job, just needs fully waterproofing if you're going swimming!

got a warn 12'000 on the front of mine,not as fast as an 8274 but pulls past where an 8274 would stall even on a single line

LOL well said, Im after a winch as well, if it take 3 hours to get me out of a hole i dont mind as long as i dont have to spend the night!

I would go for Superwinch EP9 or a Come Up as they are both good winches for the money. You get a good solenoid with the ep9 too.
I'd get one winch and uprate solenoids to Albright ones, extra battery and fit plasma on it not wire. Rather than two with standard solenoids and wire.
if you can afford two with Albrights and Plasma then go for two :wink: :wink:

Personally Ive been giving a lot of thought to the TMax 9500.
I am not looking for something to compete in events, just so its there to make life a little easier when somebody (even me) does go a little further than was sensible. Would be surprised if it wouldever really be used in anger, but like a spare wheel, nice to know its there.
Yes there is the posabilty factor too, A nice big girder on the front with a solid lump of winch will help people considering pulling out in front of me make a sensible choice :)

Funny you should say that. We have a merc estate and evryone cuts us up but no one does in the 90 with winch bumper. :lol:
I do have a budget so maybe the solenoids and plasma will have to wait a bit.
I dont plan to do any events just yet as have cage to build too !!

cage on my list too, complete with the aussie style bars along the front wings to the bull bars......may only be a 200tdi, but nothing will cross london quicker :)

I've got the T-Max 12,500! Yep....not the fastest winch! But it'll pull & pull & pull!! (Bit like me in me youth! :? )
I had a fault with mine....Brake was sticking.....T-Max were so horrified they immediately TNT'd a brand new replacement to me in Ireland! So....a thumb up for customer care & service too! :D

Be careful fitting 12,000's to a 90, you should be re-inforcing the chassis as when the cable is at one end of the drum, it is capable of twisting the chassis.
9,000 or 9,500 gets my vote, 10,000 at a push.
I've been reliably informed that only the Landcruiser has a chassis strong enough by default for a 12,000 (out of the car type 4x4s, not unimogs and alike) and yes, I do mean the chassis, not just a new bumper on the front.

Think some of you have missed the point, ep9 great winch. The cheap ones take forever...and whilst they are going really slowly about their business they are also far less efficient. That means they are more likely to overheat and kill you battery.
Most of the time when you are trying to save money im all for it but cheap winches could really leave you in the poo. The vehicle that was stuck is now stuck with a fritzed battery????? Not nice in the middle of nowhere.

Not sure why they do that, but the forces applied by a 12k winch when your beast is up to it's chassis in mud, is strong enough to twist the chassis. There is little strength on the chassis to prevent one side moving forwards. Tis the same on most "Ladder Chassis" beasts and you should be looking at binding the latteral supports to the main rails much like you would a roll bar. Do Landrover themselves strengthen the chassis when fitting these? or does the bumper they fit do the latteral support as well? (ie join to the crossmember as well as the chassis rails) I'm curious now.

Not an issue, I already run a dual battery system for camping, and usually have a spare spare strapped down in the back too.

You might , but a lot of people running cheaper winches are not as well prepared as yourself.
I run 2 deep cycle batteries and havent had a problem.....with 1 battery my old cheap winch used to stall the efi after a few mins of use.
