a question thats been asked and debaited many times
in a effort to reduce running costs and hearing many tales about fuel additives,bio diesel(opposed to the normal stuff available at tesco's) and
vegetable oil ie rape seed oil,what are your thoughts ie suitable mix quantities,where do you get the bio diesel from etc,and are they suitable for the newer engines eg td5

dont put either boi fuel or veg oil in a TD4 or TD5 as the pumps dont like it

Its typical that LR make a system with a picky pump, as 99% of other modern cars will run on biofuel without problems, and you can run a lot of older engines on much higher mixes, right up to straight veg oil!
Your best bet is to try an additive like pure acetone in tiny concentrations (150ml per tank), it makes a cleaner burn and has been proven to improve economy by upto 20% in some engines.

The programme within Mercedes at the moment is designed to allow new Euro 4 compliant engines run on a 5% mix...... IMHO it would b a waste of time effort and money to mix just 5% Bio..... more than that and proven = no warranty.... but the good news is that they have a proactive approach to Bio!

I ran me 90 TD on veg oil from tesco, it smelt like a chip pan but it did the trick!

im running a 52 plate td5 110
looks like im stuck with paying full price for my diesel!

How easy is acetone to get hold of, and would it work in 'newer' TD5 engines?

Its very easy to get hold of, but make sure its 100% pure otherwise it may cause problems (ie: dont use nailvarnish remover!)
I got mine from a GRP/boatbuilding supplier, it comes in tins from 250ml, right up to 25l drums and more!!
Yes it works in TD5's, i am trying to find the right mix for mine but have seen about 10% improvement in economy so far which whilst isnt massive is worthwhile. Its biggest advantage though is for emissions failing TDi's and the likes where you can slap a higher concentration in and itll clean the emissions right up due to its properties of improving the burn, and claning the soot from the engine at the same time :)
