Interesting idea, one i have thought about however with the weight of a 265/75-R16 on alloy there isnt a cat in hells chance of getting the bonnet open without removal, which is a pain due to the weight!!
I think i'll stick with the rear door, hopefully soon on a swingaway carrier :)

Won't get to see much out the front either!

I picked up a spare for the 110 yesterday (didn't get one when I bought the truck), 7Jx16 modular with part-worn BFG AT on it - I'm not a small bloke, and I struggled to lift the thing  . There's no way I'd put it on the bonnet as:
a) SWMBO would never be able to see over it, and
b) I'd struggle to get the damn thing off if/when I had a flat, and
c) The bonnet hurts when it hits you on the head now, with the extra weight of a spare wheel on it, I'm sure it would really really hurt :(bigshock):

Jimbo
When I bought my old 110 Hard-Top it had a bonnet-mounted spare, I took mine of as well.
SWMBO could hardly see the front & it cut into my view of the near-side corner
I just kept it in the back laid flat with a board over it (resting on the wheelboxes)

The Wolf defenders have them mounted on the side dont they? Maybe you could do that instead, although dunno if it's legal... presumably so.

the 109 my parents used to have years ago had the wheel on the bonnet (was on 7.50s) and they got used to it :)
our defender would be another matter though - wolf rims! no thanks, dont fancy a bonnet + wolf hitting me on the head :D
