Will my 1997 Vitara pass an MOT if I remove the Catalytic Converter (it's blowing) and fit a piece of straight pipe in it's place?.
Cheers.

nope it will fail, only pre 93 cars can pass without a cat

OK, thanks for the advice, looks like I better get searching for one as the MOT is due soon :(

my 95 lwb vit hasn't had a cat for the last 3 mot's never had a problem.
i don't sctualy think there are any set co2 emmisions for the vit.

I was under the impression that after 1992 the MOT tester should run a CAT test. If no CAT is present, he cannot do this and should fail the car. So although it is not illegal to remove the CAT, it technically cannot pass an MOT.
Might be wrong, but that's the way I understood it. Mike?

All post '92 (J reg) vehicles will have cat's fitted, but the emissions allowed get tighter the newer the vehicle. I can't remember the dates or amounts though. Having said that most ECUs will throw up the light or go to limp home mode if the cat is removed.

as ive said gen-x has had 3 mots without its cat fitted and the last one was the new computer mot so shud be ok

It may be OK if the emissions are under the cat limits. If they are high she'll fail.
Technically you need a cat there but if there is no reason to look...
The Audi has been through 4 without its cat even with the huge sticker in the rear window:
'Shon Mit Katalyzer Technic!'

stick a load of fuel additive in half hour before it should lower emmisions and sail through even if they were high, just a cheeky trick i picked up from an mot man

not sure which i'd guess any that claim to lower emissions should work, millers and redex are reputable companys that produce some good stuff so i'd suggest just read a few bottles at your local car spares or halfrauds.
just so you know i dont give money back garauntees itys just a trick i was told
