Title: Rattling
Post by: Kenny on July 24, 2006, 19:29:43
Got this strange rattle coming from the bottom of the car, sort of rattle, tapping.

The thing is this only ever happens when the car is in gear and going at slow speed. Once you speed up it goes well I can't hear it...

Any thoughts what this could be, stops as soon as I put the car into park.

Damian

btw it's a 1995 V8 3.9 Discovery 300

Checked the handbrake drum...?  Only two screws holding it to back mounting.. could have come adrift and be acting like a cymbal... failing that... heat gaurd of some kind near exhaust..?

Good luck...

LOL - Love the Sprite comment.

Will take a look underneath this weekend and try and find the offending item.

A frame ball joint maybe? Does it go when you press the clutch pedal?

This may sound odd, but check the Alternator, I had a similar rattling and it sounded like it was underneath inside the bell housing, but it was the alternator disintegrating.

The rattle also stopped while in park, which was weird, but not for long, soon it was rattling all the time, and got decidedly worse.

It could be any of the ancillaries, whilst in park the load is removed from them, then when selecting a gear the load returns and thus the rattle. It could be a small bearing coming to end of its life or even something stuck to or coming off of a pulleywheel or a belt starting to delaminate leaving an unstuck piece to hit somethng. Best bet is to get someone to put it into gear when you have your head under the bonnet. Just make sure the handbrake is on!
