I saw a German Discovery 3 at Billing with a swing away carrier on the rear bumper.
Wow!!
It completes the rear end and looks like a Discovery again.
I knew it was in there somewhere :wink:

? The current underslung spare doesn't affect departure angles. If you manage to hit it you're into bumper ripping off territory (believe me :oops: )

I thought Land Rover recommended removal of the spare wheel before off roading.....
I guessed this was for departure angles....
So what d you think it is for :? Do you remove yours?

beats me why they moved it in the first place think underslung is the worst place for a spare. imagine trying to get to it in a mud hole. and if you remove it before off roading were are you going to put ti yep in the back so they should of just left it there same with the rangy whats the problem with the spare in side

People Hi,
AFAIK there is one Israeli company manufacturing spare wheel carriers for the LR3 (I know that well since I cooperate with them and import their bits in Greece for the one of the official LR dealers.
It is a bit expensive and to be frank with anyone on this forum I believe that the other goodies (engine and gearbox skid plates, rocksliders for the area below the side doors and soon to be introduced a rear diff protector) are a much better way to spend your money.
The underslung spare is not that bad an idea unless you get a flat tyre in a mudhole.
But then again you are in a real problem anyway regardless of whether your spare wheel is mounted at the rear or in the undercarriage.

As well as the carrier in Jakes pic (which is the expensive Israeli one I think) Kaymar are now doing a replacement bumper for the D3 that will carry two spares or a spare and a jerry can (or even two jerry cans I suppose)
The spare underneath isn't that big a problem, it helps lower the CoG and also provides some extra protection should you get hit in the rear. Biggest problem on the D3 is getting the thing wound down, you have to raise the 3rd row of seats to get to the winder which is a pain if you've got a load of stuff in the back (and who hasn't?!). I've made a minor mod on mine so I can just push a socket extension bar down the gap between the seats on to a socket that' s permanently attached to the winder and drop the wheel without having to move anything around in the back
If you're in a mudhole are you really going to stay in there to change it whether its underneath or on the back? I suspect the chances are you're going to drive or get pulled out onto somewhere where it's possible to jack the car up safely to change the flat

Tim, I think they recommend removing it and putting it in the back when off roading so it's easily accessible. They obviously didn't allow for the fact that with a minor modification (that they should have built into the vehicle anyway) it's easily accessible anyway, there again I suppose they have to assume people won't be modifying their D3s (yeah, like that's not going to happen!)

'Outback Import' is the company who provided the D3 wheel-carrier in the August copy of 'LRO'
