Title: Off roader for the lad

Hi all I'm looking for an off roader for the lad he's 15 so it's just for off road use.I've seen them been towed on a towing dolly(A frame to the steering all 4 wheels on the floor).Do they have to be road legal to use one of these or can you tow anything with them.Cheers Pete

From the above I hope it is clear that we believe the use of "A" frames to tow cars behind other vehicles is legal provided the braking and lighting requirements are met. However, while this is our understanding of the meaning of the Regulations, it is only the Courts which can reach a definitive interpretation of the law.


The use of "dollies" is intended for the recovery of broken down vehicles, not for the transportation of a vehicle from "A" to "B". Under Regulation 83 of C&U a motor car is permitted to tow two trailers when one of them is a towing implement and the other is secured to and either rests on or is suspended from the implement. Therefore as a trailer if the maximum laden weight of the dolly exceeds 750 kg it must be fitted with operational brakes, additionally the brakes on the wheels of the second trailer (the towed car) must work and meet the specified requirements. Again this would be very difficult for the rear brakes of a motor car, on their own, to meet the 50% braking efficiency required for a trailer. The dolly would also be required by Regulation 22 of C&U to be fitted with suspension. Regulations 19 and 22 in C&U permit a broken down vehicle to be recovered without complying with these requirements. However, there is further legislation under the Road Traffic Act that introduces a limitation on the maximum speed that the combination can be driven; this is 40mph on motorways and 20mph on other roads.

I have never met any one who has been pulled yet
Or never heard of any one being done.
If its looking bad tell the plod its broken and you are towing it home, make sure your towing weights are legal and lights etc correct.
I use a Solomatic A frame for towing cars we buy and havent as yet had any trouble.
I have had no problems with my SJ which is towed using a custom made A frame attached to the chassis.
I would keep the car looking good and clean so it looks road legal, but make sure the tyres are road legal then its a traier, but its just over the legal 750Kg un breaked weight.
One guy I met has run a thick cable from the hitch to a pnumatic cylinder mounted on the brake pedal, it dosnt do any thing but looks as though its breaked

The first paragraph is correct but the second refers to dollys which are not A franes ( they are the little things with wheels on)

basically if a wheel/tyre is touching the floor then the car has to be road legal

What we need is some one to quote the relivant law and a link to the source and clear this up, I have read it but cant remember where, but it was vague.

trailers for cares you can pick up for 300 quid, so spend that little bit more and be legal :D

As is £1000, its got 5 brand new Greenway Machos, Stainless braided brake lines,new wheel bearings, new king pin bearings, new prop shaft UJ, soft top and Genuine Suzuki Hard top with heated rear window.
It needs the boot floor welding, its half done, fuel tank fitting.It comes with its own A frame
It draws a crowd when ever you park it, I dont really want to sell but could do with the garage back

i never had a problem pullin the 410 on an A frame!however they are ment to be braked,easy enough to rig up,i never bothered tho!

if you do get pulled just plead ignorance,tell the copper that you'r just takin it home etc.also depends on the copper as to if you can blag him or not! :wink:

SJ is now sold, its a very sad time for me , but too many projects.
