Title: FAO: Devon Based Members
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on July 31, 2006, 00:27:50
Can anyone fill me in on a little matter please??

I meant to post this earlier, but I forgot

I've been told that the beautiful hotel on Burgh Island has closed down, if it has, I hope it's only temporary as we're fancying a weekend there at some point.

Official web-site (http://www.burghislandhotel.co.uk/)

BBC panoramic (http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/content/panoramas/bigbury_burgh_island_360.shtml)

I haven't heard anything. Have you e-mailed them the ask and see if they have closed?

BTW the website is a bit out of date. The roadworks outside of exeter are not there anymore.

AFAIK it's still open (the South Hams Gazette hasn't said anything about it unless it was while I was away).  Although, the tea room isn't open to non-residents any more, which was a shame as it was a great place for a cream tea.

Perhaps that what was meant

Pity as if we didn't stop there, I wanted to go fo 'High Tea'

I've liked it since seeing it in the TV production of 'Evil Under The Sun' & reading Tony Porters book about the restoration

And of course. simply because it's 'Art-Deco' architecture

That and also that you can drive over there in your Defender and get salt water in the chassis!  Last year somebody drove a scaffolding van across on an incoming tide, got it stuck and later watched it drifting out to sea.  They recovered it next low tide, but apparently the boss wasn't best pleased.

It's obviously an island, well to be pedantic, more of an Isthmus (if a beach driveable at low-tide counts in that respect?)

It's located within the red circle (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=265000.121905049&Y=45000.028846703&width=700&height=400&gride=264476.121905049&gridn=43761.028846703&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=500000), just off the Devon coast

Richard,
I seem to recall a problem with the paths on the Island being closed
because of erosion, thus upsetting the local Red Sock Brigade.
So no change there then
When are you down, I would like to meet a "celeb"
