My disco has got metal maggots in the usual places, but now there is a hole at the top of the wheel arch when you open the rear door. Does anyone have a clue if there is a replacement part or aftermarket product that can be cut in to fit as required???
All help greatfully recieved,
Sogster.

No there is not a replacement panel. Most 4-dr RR have this same problem. Just grind out as much as you can and weld a patch over the top.

Basically, patching is the easiest, or you can whack some filler in it for now...
There is a replacement panel, but it's for the whole outer section you can see with the door open - requires the 1/4 panel to be removed.
I was quoted about 10 hours a side for replacement.
See rear arch panel:

Not sure why the link isn't working - if you cut and paste it it should work - of not, try this and look it up under the Discovery panel/chassis parts:

If the hole is near the seat belt mounting, it will need welding soonest, as if the belt is in use it may fail at a nasty moment
Also will fail an mot if like that
But as said, its not that hard to weld up, just need to clear away the gear around it inside and keep an eye on the outside for cooking underseal

10 hours my arse! only if there is nothing left to weld it to. If you remove the 1/4 panel you risk it not lining up again when you have finished.
-
That's what the fella told me. To be fair I think that was a worst case scenario quote as he hadn't actually seen the vehicle.
-
the hole is right up in the corner. It will be an MOT failure as my mechanic explained to me.
The link to the website was good. might be ordering a couple of new arches and see if we cant get them fitted.
many thanks to all of you with your suggestions. i'll let you know how it all ends up and take some snaps.

Had a hole in exactly this place on mine as purchased, bloke who welded it said it was as easy to patch over as it would be to cut the repair panel so that the quarter panel could be left in place.
Weld, grinding and satin black paint and the job's a good 'un :)

Yeah I've done several, as long as you can cut back to good metal it's not that hard, just remember that special dimple in the arch is to clear the button for the childproof locks, leave it out and the door lock gets damaged.

Mine went in the same place on both sides.
When my car went into the body shop recently i got them to repair them.
As far as i can see they patched from underneth and filled the top.
They disposed of the bad rusty stuff too.
Looks great now.

They look really good.
I would be more than happy if my arches ended up like those!!

Hi Jake,
can you let me know how much you paid for your arches to be fixed?
I have just been quoted £240 for both sides
Cheers,
Sogster

Sorry i could'nt.
When the car went in for some other work i got them to include the arch repairs in the insurance bill.
I saved them some money by getting the replacment door they required for the repairs.
Thus saving them around £300(ish)
Your quoted price sounds about right if you want it to look nice.
You could get it done cheaper but it would look it.

Just got the cae back from the paint shop and it looks quite good. Im not able to wash the car for a few days, but I can live with that. Its much nicer being back in the Disco after having to drive a Nissan Almera for ten days. The side with hole in it became a more serious job as the rot had tracked quite a way down the rear arch and even more on the underside heading towards the rear of the car.

Im quite happy with the end result, but a mate of mine in the trade reckons it could do with a lot more under seal on it underneath. so im popping down in the morning and he's going to do it for me!!!
The pint is a mighty powerful bargaining tool.!!

Hi Sogster,
Do you have any "before" pics? I'm just wondering how it compared to mine and how quickly I need to get it done.
Mind you, I can see the road through one of mine already

Hi Steve,
my near side went into a hole about 7 months ago. When I bought it about 4 yrs ago there was a lot of surface rust bubbling up under the paintwork near the top of of the wheel arches. They will need repairing before the MOT if holed as they are to close to seat belt anchors. I forgot to take a snap before it went in and im not sure if I have one on file anywhere, I will have a look and let you know.
