It's all good until they get a bit older and start "borrowing" you tools. My 10 year old isn't too bad but lately he's taken to leaving the MIG gas turned on when he's been welding - I was out of the workshop the other day and he was dropped off by Mum and tacked all the tags and gussets onto a couple of RSJ's that were all marked out ready to go. I had a bit to say to my offsider about letting him do it, but I can't really squash his enthusiam. He made a top job - all nice and square and right on the marks - he'll be better at it than I am by the time he leaves school. Funny thing is that he doesn't want to be an engineer when he grows up.

I was patching some holes in Thora last weekend. While rubbing down, Riley (my four year son) came out to see what I was doing. "What's that machine do dad?" pointing at the welder. It nearly brought a tear to my eye. I was so chuffed, and he was properly interested when I was explaining to him what it does (blows holes in rusty metal ).

You forgot to mention the lovely Arc eye when the coordination of nozzle and shield goes awry! Oh and the bits of molten metal that always seem to manage to get either inside your boots or even worse inside your ear!
