Title: Do you eat British?
Post by: smo on August 06, 2006, 17:15:13: I like to support British industry, particually our food stuffs and so where i can i always buy British meat and veg, even better if its local but thats not always possible!

so, do you buy British or do you buy the cheapest?

Organic meat is a complete illusion, just look up the specs of what they feed the animals in the winter......Just look up the specs for organic full stop......Then think of the extra profit to be made.

The only way of knowing what you are eating is to grow and raise it yourself.

There are a huge amount of false claims made about food and most of them without fear of prosecution, there are not enough peeps policing the industry.
The industry is corrupt, it is endemic, it is in the pursuit of wealth and power.

I know, I have worked in the industry and with the industry for over 20 years.

Post by: smo on August 07, 2006, 09:01:02: Scarry, but from what i have seen even the poor standards in some parts of the UK are far better than those in the EU/other places, and its about supporting our own country and our own farmers.

And most the veg i buy is local grown :)

Have my own fruit or mum in law supplies it :D

Had my own hens till the BL**DY fox got them last month :cry:

my parents are sheep and beef farmers, they breed pedigree herefords, (and show them nationally too)

so top quality munch

We have a local farm shop that sells all manner of locally grown/produced fruit, veg, cheese, bread etc - slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but the taste of 'real' veg is worth the extra few pence

And.......some local friends breed 'large black' pigs (a rare breed) - the pork and sausages from them is out of this world. We're going to try curing ham and bacon next.......if it's successful, I'll be able to eat true locally produced bacon butties forever !!!!!

Austrailian steak was cheaper than british in Morrisons
dont mention NewZeland lamb

i think there could be a worthy campain for for GREEN-PEAS :lol:
its about time we had fairtrade for British producers and a green policy on food :wink:

It is fair to say we don't check it's origins (although it seems this is totally irrelevant anyway!). But we very often buy meat locally. Either from the local farm or butcher. The local butcher is cheaper than the supermarket anyway.

Our eggs come from round the corner. I have complete confidence they are fresh every morning. And our chickens can be chosen while they are still running around!

We pre-book our beef and pork which is supplied once the animal is slaughtered.

I think it is a common mistake to assume smaller suppliers are going to be expensive. It is more often than not that they are cheaper anyway.

I find its better when fresh, our local farmer always gives much more than i pay for. Supermarket stock is usually a week or more old.
Plus i know who the money is going to :wink: .

Post by: LOFTY on August 07, 2006, 20:06:06: I love it when farmers start barking on about buy British food stuff, there he is sat in a Shogun, with yard full of John Deere tractors, and other foreign equipment, Then when you point that out, they start going on about the fact you cant buy British farm equipment anymore, so its not his fault.

But the reason there is no British equipment, is the fact the farmers all bought the cheap imported stuff, and put all the British companys out of business.

There are some hard working, farmers out there, and some fat lazy subsidy, set aside, stewardship grabbing gits.

I always buy from local producers.....and if possible organic from local sources. If I am out and about on my travels and see local produce....I always buy and freeze. British is what I always try to buy(and not just food).
If we dont support our own ...like the local shops one day they may not be there - So don't complain once they are no longer in existance.

I'm unconvinced they had BSE outbreaks and other problems long before the UK ever did, and yet for some reason no one imposed bans on their food....

Still its good that so many do buy british, i firmly believe its some of the best food you can buy, altho my mum does one better because its british grown, hand nurchered, organic and best of all free (when we go to visit!).
