I am biased, but I think there great, quick compared to a TDI, 28mpg, quiet, and if you have a gas conversion like mine, then really cheap to run. Off road the standard engine lacks low down grunt, but get the cam shaft reprofiled for bottom end power and it will suprise you.  :D

never had one, but the thought of a 2litre N/Apetrol lump in a motor that size dosent inspire me at all, whilst im running a 200tdi right now and would class it as adequate, i still lust after a V8, a careful right foot will get you into the high 20s on a run (based on personal experience of rangies).

basically the mpi wasnt even on my consider list when I went shopping and ended up with my current heap, but each to their own :)

Engine specs 16 valve, twin cam, 140 bhp, 131 ftlbs torque
Take a tdi then a mpi for a test drive, is the best way to decide

what V8 was that then i want it   careful tickling of the loud pedal on mine can see the heady heights of 16mpg but usually the way i drive its around 13mpg :(

Well I get 19mpg on LPG, so based on that I'd expect low twenties on Unleaded...not that I could bring myself to run on Unleaded for more than a few minutes, it'd give my wallet a heart attack

ive had 2 v8s get into the better end of the 20s when driven gently.

a 3.5efi auto that had oil changes and full services almost monthly (I worked in a garage at the time and palyed drity every week so a quick clean & service was never a problem)

I also got a trip average of 27 from a 3.9 auto doing exter-london along the motorway with the cruise con set at about 62 (just fast enough to pass the lorries)

thanks for the replys, i was seriously considering a V8 with lpg but my budget wont stretch to a minter and if anything went wrong with the gas i could see it being an expensive job and as i'll have it as a family car and a newborn to keep in a few mths i could do with some simple motoring.

so i think i'll probably end up with a tdi and just service it regularly although i might take an mpi out on a test drive just to see what its like.

cheers mart

They are cheap........ as nobody seems to want them

This means you can pick one up for little, but does the eventual resale value (or lack of) factor into your economy equasions?

yeh thats partly why i'm looking at the tdi's at least they'll be worth something when i come to sell it whereas a normal car would be off to the scrapyard in the sky lol

AHEM!!!!!

Mart, Son, sit down and think rationally......................  How easy were You recovered???????

THE Land-Rover TDI is gods own engine.....  END OF DISCUSSION.  The K series is a cr@p engine in a car never mind a Landy

My Mpi has never really had any issues off road. Its slow, eats head gaskets for breakfast, and next time the engine breaks its getting replaced for a V8 :)

28mpg     that must be because your being towed behind something else.  Mines doing about 18, v8 figures hence my reason for v8'ing

i have read elsewhere (parkers guide) that the economy difference between the V8 & the mpi was minimal, but glad to hear it confirmed. the v8 wont need to work anywhere near as hard as the mpi, so although using more fuel per rev of the engine, you dont need to rev anywhere near as hard to move along thus saving fuel there

i have to disagree as my mums had eaten 2 head gaskets in 3 weeks and has now dropped the bottom end, and is completly knackered, the mpg is about the same as my dads V8 and they only run out of petrol when i am driving it

Looks like you need a better mechanic, someone who knows how to work on the MPI engine, if you would like the engine manual let me know, as there is a simple mod that needs to be done with a head gasket change, or you will blow the gasket again, any decent mechanic should have known that, and I checked the mpg today this tank full worked out at 26.5 mpg :D

do tell us what the mod is, other than a different engine as this one is S**T and as it happens i am a Mechanic but i dont work for rover and it is only rover that has had the problems with head gaskets
