SOund Navigation And Ranging
SONAR (SOund Navigation And Ranging)  or sonar  (in British use ASDIC until 1948) is a technique that uses sound propagation under water to navigate or to detect other vessels. There are two kinds of sonar  active and passive. Sonar is a subcategory of acoustic location.

Laser is the one word the unequivicably proves that Americans are thick. As has been stated, it is an acronym, a wordmade up of initials. So why do the yanks spell it with a "z"?
