Title: When your TDi blows up!
Post by: landyman Ash on August 12, 2006, 21:46:36
Seeing as Ive been on the landy all day I fancied a pint so thought I'd put the bits I broke in my pocket and take them to the pub.

Back now after lots of "ouch's", "ooooo's" and "bet that was costly" I thought I'd bring it to my second fav bar

4 bent push rods, one bent rocker, one snapped rocker.

Arent they great!!!!

I actually did the entire top end, all new bits just so its done and I dodnt have to worry, even then ALL new bits only came to £248.  If I'd just done the push rods and two rockers the bill would of been :

Pushrods : £3.07
Rocket (tappet slide) £15.66

So only £40 for the lot but took the head off just to check so thought sod it, do the lot.

I always keep broken bits,
I only have a broken track rod end and a half shaft so far .
Not bad for 5 years and 7 vehicles.
I am planing on spraying them a bright colour and mounting them on a plinth

If I kept all my broken bits I'd need another garage

Belt didnt snap, it slipped which can be worse.

If the belt snaps the valves then stay in that position and what ever is in the wrong position gets broken.  When it slips, EVERYTHING can get broken as the valves are still moving but in the wrong position!

Thankfully I was going slow and I killed engine straight away.  One valve hot the piston but no damage

so its not critical then? reason i ask is because i dont know when our timing belt was last done, and i cant afford to pay for a garage to do it/dont have the space or knowledge to do it myself....

everywhere that we've remotely spoke to about it before has said, in not so many words, if it breaks you'll need a new engine...

sounded like a very extreme outcome to me...

Depends......

Usually it will just blow top end.  However depends on circumstances.  My mates 300tdi snapped its belt at 75mph, piston hit the valve, snapped it and it dropped into engine.  By the time be'd stop the valve had scored the piston so badly he needed a new block!!!

Its rare that happens but bare it in mind.
